Looking to buy my first Pelude, but I have a few ?'s

Forgive me if this is in the wrong spot but I'm new to the forum.

Ive been looking at a 97 prelude that is in very good condition, has only 70,000 miles on it, and has only seen two winters thus far.

If I were to buy this car I would be driving it during the winter.

Are 5th gen preludes especially susceptible to rust (compared to other cars) ?
If so what could I do to keep rust from destroying the car?

And yes, I tried the search but couldn't find anything.

Re: Looking to buy my first Pelude, but I have a few ?'s

I don't think they are any more susceptible to rust than other cars.... Does it have rust spots on it?

I'm not sure where you're going with this... As long as the paint is all good and there are no rust spots on there, you shouldn't have any problems.

Now, if there are rust spots, you want to get that taken care of immediately because it will spread (same with any car and any bare metal, really).

Re: Looking to buy my first Pelude, but I have a few ?'s

It doesnt look like it has any, but I have to check when I go to see it.

And yeah, I do understand that if it has rust you must take care of it and that any car can rust.

Its just that I have seen cars that seem to be more prone to rust than others.

Re: Looking to buy my first Pelude, but I have a few ?'s

since its a northern car...
yes it probably will have rust.
salt ftmfl.

also if your looking to buy a fifth gen..
make sure is a 5 SPEED BASE MODEL.

trust.

sh's have atts which i dont even wanna get into this cause there are thousands of threads on every prelude forum about it..
but basically its not easy or fun to modify motorwise and susspensionwise...

and like every atts unit goes out...even mine.

also ALL of the 97-01 auto transmissions fail..
they do..
search around for all the info on that to..

basically...

you want under 100,000 miles, no rust, 5 speed, base, never been wrecked...

and you will love her...

also if its around the 100,000 mile mark, make sure the timing belt, water pump, tensioner etc. has been changed..

good luck on your hunt man!

iheartmybb6 phrased it best, stick with with that advice and let us know the asking price so we can help with that.

I would consider looking under the wheel wells to look for rust.

+1, if there is rust it is most likely to be there

if you are going to be driving it in the winter get the car oil sprayed, helps a lot and is one of the reasons why my dad's 94 camry with over 300 000 klicks on it doesn't even have a tiny spot of rust anywhere

Re: Looking to buy my first Pelude, but I have a few ?'s

Sounds like a good deal man. As for how to prevent rust, honestly I wish I knew the secret too. I live in the Chicago area and Winter is always messy. I don't think there really is anything you can do, which sucks, but that's why some people choose to own the lude and an additional DD (daily driver). Rust is generally not a HUGE thing to repair though, but it's really not something you want to buy a car with either.

ya iheartmybb6 got it. i live in ct, so much salt here. i just go to the carwash after every snowstorm and get the undercarriage washed. take off the little rubber things in the rear wheel well too. itll rust out first there. there just trap the moisture
