99 prelude clutch problem

I have 99 prelude, while am holding the clutch down, it hard to put it in first gear. The only way it goes to first gear is if I turn-off the car and started again. But when I do that, the whole engine shakes a lot. Is that a clutch preblem or something else? I haven't driven the car since. What should I do? and also makes wired noises.

Re: 99 prelude clutch problem

clutch spring is probably broken, time to replace the clutch, but first check you clutch fluid.

Re: 99 prelude clutch problem

it might be as simple as just bleeding the clutch.

Re: 99 prelude clutch problem

Yeah don't assume the worst (yet). Check the clutch hydraulic system. Check your fluid level, check for leaks, bleed the clutch.

As you are pushing the clutch down, is there a lot of free play before you get any sort of resistance?

If so, you may also benefit from adjusting the clutch height (you want to bring the point of engagement closer to you and farther from the floor, so you thread the push rod IN towards the engine compartment).

Is there hardly any resistance at all?

If so, you may benefit from bleeding the system, or you may have a faulty slave/master cylinder.

Diagnose in this order:
Check fluid level
Check for leaks
Check your slave cylinder function
Check your master cylinder function (also get on the floor near your pedals and see if there is any fluid leaking from around the push rod).
Bleed the system.
If still no improvement, adjust the height so it engages a bit higher up (check this thread http://preludezone.com/showthread.php?t=21737 )

If none of that helped, then it's time to replace the actual clutch and/or throwout bearing.
