Looking to possibly get a prelude. Is this a good deal?

Someone locally around 30 minutes away is selling a prelude that I might go down and check out soon. These are the specs:

2001 Prelude SH

-Engine ~10,000 miles
-Transmission ~40,000 miles

-Engine rebuilt with prelude type s internals (JDM Parts)
-Block was torque-horned before pistons were put in
-Cylinder head was decked, mild ported and mild polished to rais compression ratio to 10.6:1
-All seals, gaskets, and belts replaced with OEM parts
-Transmission has a stage 2 act cerametallic 6-puck clutch, 9lbs ultra lightweight chromoly flywheel and 3500lbs pressure plate
-Almost brand new Dragon R short ram intake, stainless steel performance header, an extra cold air intake with aem dry-flow filter and new ngk iridium spark plugs
-Energy suspension engine mount inserts in both front and rear

-Interrior is stock and very clean
-Exterrior is stock with type sh lip kit, almost new rota slipstream rims wrapped in ventus V4ES (~90% tread left)

Price is around 6300.

The odometer reads ~158k. He is the second owner and engine was rebuilt by the ownder before him and the car has a new oil change and transmission fluid. Also car has never been in any accidents.

Here are a few pics that I uploaded of it.

I know a little about cars but not very much so the above engine work doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me, so could anyone tell me if this should be a good car that should last a while without any problems?

Re: Looking to possibly get a prelude. Is this a good deal?

Sounds like a nice car, But do you plan on using it as a daily driver? Cuz from what I've heard( sorry have no experience personally with aftermarket clutches) But stage 2 clutch may not be so fun to drive around. someone correct me if I'm wrong. Other than that seems like a sturdy car, test drive it at least. Looks like the guy was doing an N/A build. SOUNDS like it should be reliable.

btw welcome to pz, others should chime in soon with some more insight...

Re: Looking to possibly get a prelude. Is this a good deal?

Thanks for the fast reply!

It would be used as a daily driver as im 17 turning 18 in about a month and was looking to buy a car. Ive been stuck between what I wanted to buy between a older civic w/ mods, a prelude, or a older wrx. But I called my insurance company up yesterday and the wrx was knocked off the list due to the high insurance price. So im hoping a prelude wont be too much as it is 3 years older than the wrx I called about (04 Wrx sedan) and it doesnt have a turbo in it like the wrx's do.

Re: Looking to possibly get a prelude. Is this a good deal?

You better buy that before I do, Nuff said.

10k miles on a new rebuilt engine is the equal of you walking to your friedge in a new pair of shoes, that baby is asking to be broke in. and 6300 for a clean interior relativly new engine very nice exterior means you're prob not going to find a better deal than that any time soon.

my 2 cents: Get on that ASAP before its gone, no joke.

QFT

Any 2 door car you get with a sports built engine isnt going to be cheap on insurance, but for the price you're buying that car you might have a bit of change left over. I would just get a Job if you do not already have one. Its going to be expensive somewhat but as long as you obey the law and dont drive recklessly you should be fine, GL with your choice!

Re: Looking to possibly get a prelude. Is this a good deal?

i know from experience STAGE 2 Clutches are no fun in traffic. its got to where if i even have to pull up to a stop light i put it in neutral. i put my clutch in at 25k miles and i just rolled over 130k. ive never had to replace my clutch even with my wife driving it everyonce in a while i dont let her anymore cause i got sick of smelling burning clutch. so from my experience they last alot longer then stock clutches.

Well lets say I did get it and get it insured, would it be insured just as a regular type sh or do you have to tell them the engine mods and things? Ive never insured a car other than a stock car lol

Just get it insured as a type SH, they usually dont care untill you go forced induction, I.E. Turbo/Supercharger. Then they start caring =p

have them get a quote on it before you buy it though make sure they wnt jack it up at the last second.

Well one problem is, Ive never driven a manual car before, my dad has plenty of times here in the U.S when we had to get a rental car and mainly when he goes to england to visit his parents, so I would have to get him to teach me. Would it be alot harder to learn on a stage 2?

Re: Looking to possibly get a prelude. Is this a good deal?

the learning principles are the same. the clutch is just harder to push in and it will also engage harsher than a stock clutch because it grabs better when u release it.

it'll probably be an absolute nightmare haha. but since you've never driven a standard before, who knows. because you're not used to an oem clutch

stage 2 kicks back at you! haha but i like stage 2. my buddy has it on his gsr and its nice. you'll get used to everything. patience is a virtue. but that car is a very good deal. I'd get it. Just be careful with it!

Re: Looking to possibly get a prelude. Is this a good deal?

I've got a stage one clutch on my 97 base lude (stock 5spd tranny with 180k on it, and JDM H22A dropped in with about 100k on it now) and it works beautifully.

93vteclude is right in the since that higher stage clutches are rougher in traffic (but driving a standard in stop and go gets tiring anyway). But he is not right (correct me if I am wrong please) that stage clutches last longer, in general, than OEM. In both his and my experience they last a very long time as I had mine installed when the engine was dropped in 100k ago but from what I've read OEM is more reliable. (but not as fun, hehe)

Also, andrewv, I am assuming this is a 5spd manual. If not he should know about the issues with the auto tranny.

If it is a manual, that is a very good deal on a very reliable and fun vehicle. As prelude owners all know, you might not be the fastest, but you are fast and look damn good.

Hey is that car in NJ? I was looking at that car but decided I didn't want the type SH and the fact that he modded it already. It does look very clean and the fact that it has the rebuilt engine and low millage tranny make it even better.

yeah it is

Just called up the insurance company today only costs ~80 more than the 02 accord im currently insured on. So not pricey at all. What are some main differences between a type s engine and the stock engine? Or is that rebuild faster than a stock jdm type s engine? If so about on estimate how much hp and possibly torque do you think that car has?

idk, 158k on an 01? I had 100k on my 96. And Swapping the engine at 158k means abuse to the car. Those engines should last longer. i would try and get him down to like 5500

Have fun driving with that fly wheel, let alone the clutch. The 2 combined is gonna give u a HORRIBLE daily drive. Ur gonna have to shift quick before it nose dives.

Re: Looking to possibly get a prelude. Is this a good deal?

there is nothing wrong w/ stage 2 clutch. I use to drive my lude w/ a stage 2 4 puck clutch everyday in Atlanta traffic. didn't bother me what so ever. But that's just my opinion. you better get that car before I decide to buy another lude and it ends up being that one lol.
