17's vs 18's

Alright i have a 17 of 17inch 7 spoke rims. There pretty nice, however iv always wanted 18's just becuase I loked the look a bit better.

But from what people are telling me that if i get 18's my tires will constantly be needing changing, is this true? and performance wise will the lighter 17 inch give me an edge?

P.S. Ill have pics of my lude up soon, its in the shop getting hosing replaced then out to the car was for a little waxin.

Re: 17's vs 18's

18's will definitely wear your tread down sooner, which will result in a more frequent buying of tires. 18's also ride like total ass, so if you like feeling every bump in the road it's really up to you. I have 17's which are just the right balance of show and function. Anything bigger on a Prelude just looks too big. If you really want an "edge" performance wise, go with 16's.

Wow i just read my post and noiced typo galore.

Ya I like my 17's but my tires look way to agressive for me car as in they have these grooves that go all the way around the wheel and they almost look like dirt track tires. What are some nice looking low profile tires that i might be able to snag?

Re: 17's vs 18's

There's a lot of great tires out there, but the dimensions you want are gonna be 205-40-r17. I don't know if you have a deep offset or something on your wheels so that first "205" number may change to a larger one, but if you want low-pro's the middle number should be 40.

Could be. It's based on the offset of the wheel.

Re: 17's vs 18's

A 205/40/R17 tire will make your speedo about 5% too fast unless its recalibrated.

Recommended tire size is a 215/40/R17. http://preludezone.com/showthread.php?t=170

And 18" rims imo look way too big and they ride like crap.

Re: 17's vs 18's

Neither is "better" In some cases 18s look better, but as most have stated the ride quality is compromised due to the lower profile tyre. Though witha good suspension tune this is mostly alleviated.

Also, I'm at a loss as to how 18s will will definitely wear your tread down sooner. If you correctly maintain your wheel alignment and tyre pressures there should be no problems. Unless you're buying poor quality tyres, which tends to happen when people realise that for the same sort of money as a good quality 17 inch tyre you can only afford an el-cheapo 18in tyre.

Well, if you're gonna go with a big rim might as well raise it a little more and go with some twenty-fo's.

Re: 17's vs 18's

I prefer the look of 17's, but only with a 45mm profile. 40mm profiles make the wheel look too small and doesnt fill the arch properly. 205/40/17 is smaller than the stock 205/50/16.

Re: 17's vs 18's

That's funny. I like my new tires, 215/40/17 much more than my 45 series larger tire dwarfed the wheel. I'm very happy with the balance of rubber to metal on my 5th gen that's lowered. I've 18s on a 4th gej that I liked due to the slightly thicker body. The tire wear is kinda horsecrap I think colin hit the nail on the head. Rather than good tires people cheap out when confronted with the price of 18" tires. Also, they won't ride THAT much worse. The difference between 40 and 35 series tires is minimal, in fact, 5%! The difference is mostly in rotating mass. Wheel for wheel the 18s will accelerate and brake slower. Now if you've got a heavy cast 17" chrome wheel and go to a forged 18" you're probably better off.

I have 18" and my lude and it does not run like crap. Maybe it depends on the suspension set up? Good luck on your choice.
