what kind of oil does Sh tranny take.

I want to change my tranny oil in my sh, since it has 170k on it and i dont know when it was changed last. So wat type of oil do i need to buy and how much. I went to oriley and they told me just to use 10- 40w motor oil and 2.4 quaters of oil. Also how do i fill it back up. I know how to drain it, i think.

If you find the drain plug,a little ways up you should be able to find the fill. I don't have any pics, get under there and look around, its not too hard to find...And if its anything like howme and my friend did his tranny fill on a chevy your goin to need some hose to run from the top side of the engine down to the fill hole. Should be pretty straight forward from there.

Re: what kind of oil does Sh tranny take.

Definitely don't use regular motor oil... You need gear oil.

I do recommend getting Honda MTF from a dealer (just call the closest one and order it, i'm sure they'll ship it to you). If not, go with GM synchromesh I suppose. I can't vouch for it personally, but a lot of people use it so its reputation precedes it.

Also, since it's an SH, I recommend changing the ATTS fluid as well. Use Honda ATF fluid to refill that (Yes, ATF... the ATTS is very much like a small Automatic transmission with pressure switches and hydraulic clutch packs... the fluid inside needs to be pressurized so you need to use Automatic transmission fluid... preferably Honda brand).

Re: what kind of oil does Sh tranny take.

i forgot to mention when i changed my fluid in my old 87 i put in tractor gear oil. but thats because it was getting worn out. i wouldnt recommend doing that on a newer car.

The same way you change any/every fluid in any/every car. You open the drain plug and let the old stuff drain out... then you close the drain plug. Then you open the fill plug and fill it up until the fluid level is up to the fill hole. Then you close the fill plug and wash your hands because you're done.

Refer to the manual for instructions on where to find the fill/drain plugs.
