Do You Know What This Sound Is?

Automatic....97 Base
It makes this noise once the car is started up. Sometimes I can hear it while driving, other times I don't hear it.
It sounds like it is coming from the transmission area, but I'm really not sure. I do have problems with the transmission slipping most of the time and banging into d4 and reverse.

Re: Do You Know What This Sound Is?

MAKE SURE it's not coming from the timing belt side!!!
hopefully it's not the timing belt rubbing against the VC.

That's what I was also thinking. It could be one of the belts, but the previous owner changed the timing belt at 118,000 miles. I now have 138,xxx miles on the car. I will recheck tomorrow morning to see if it is coming from the timing belt side

Re: Do You Know What This Sound Is?

and i guess before that, you can attempt to tighten the PS and AC/alt belts and see if the sound changes/goes away, cuz it does sound like a belt of some sort.

Re: Do You Know What This Sound Is?

I agree with Nick man, eliminate the possibilities. Hopefully you havn't been driving around with the belt hitting the VC like he suggested.

Re: Do You Know What This Sound Is?

It's sounds like the either a planetary gear set is worn or the tranny fluid pump. The harsh shift into overdrive could be due to the pump or the pump pressure solenoid being faulty and allowing high line pressure. Does the tranny fluid have metal in it or have a strong burnt scent. Metal blocking a path in the valve body can cause the shift problem as well. The sound will vary with trans temp as the internal parts expand with heat. Not like it helps me saying this from my end, but I hope it can just be serviced and that take care of it. I may not like automatics, but I hate to hear a fellow Luder having problems. Good luck.

Re: Do You Know What This Sound Is?

Well guys, took it to the transmission shop last monday, got a call today. Asking for 1400.00 for a rebuilt tranny. I said i'll just take it back and sell the car.....blah blah. Still debating on a 5 speed swap or just a another car.
