99 SH. Car dies when driving then starts right back up...

Okay a few weeks ago my check engine light came on, and i talked to the guy i bought it from. He said it was an O2 sensor so that's what i thought it was... (And he said the car would be fine, i dont really know alot about cars)
Until last week it died on me while i was driving then started right back up, and my buddy said it was a master relay. And i have no idea wtf is wrong with it lol... So if anybody can help, thanks!

Re: 99 SH. Car dies when driving then starts right back up...

could be a crankshaft position sensor. does the car die once it reaches operating temperature. how many miles on the car. see if it dies again and each time it dies do you have to wait a bit before the car will start. and finally do you know what that code was(check engine light.) if the check engine light is still on the go to autozone or pep boys and pull the codes.

I have not ran the codes yet, but it only happens here and there. But when it does die i can start it right back up and drive away

Re: 99 SH. Car dies when driving then starts right back up...

its unlikely that the O2 sensor will cause the car to stop while running. Get the codes pulled first. that's the best approach to find the problem.

Re: 99 SH. Car dies when driving then starts right back up...

Yeah I agree thats not the O2 sensor. once the light comes on again get it checked at Autozone. That will help point you in the right direction.

One thing is the car heating up at all on the temp gauge?

Actually the o2 sensor can cause that to happen but usually doesn't allow it to start back up that easily. Remove the 02 sensor from the system or replace it.

Re: 99 SH. Car dies when driving then starts right back up...

it could also be your ignition control module or ignition switch breaking down once it gets hot. my sisters accord did this exact same thing. i changed the ign switch and no more problems.

Re: 99 SH. Car dies when driving then starts right back up...

Replace it, hard to tell if the Autozoner (employee) knew what he was talking about. He might but I would almost be willing to bet that you replace that sucker and you'll still have your problem.

x2.
i agree with Rob. most likely the oxygen sensor is a coincidence. the stalling problem could be something else.
like your friend says it could be a relay or like the other opinions it could be the ignition.

Okay im going to replace the O2 tomorrow, but my only worry if the problem still happens. See im driving from Utah to Cali in about weeks and dont want it to die down there and not start back up

Re: 99 SH. Car dies when driving then starts right back up...

yeah, go ahead and change the o2 sensor. then see if it stalls again. also right now how frequently does it stall. observe and find as much details(like temperature, miles since start, time since start, outside conditions like hot or cold etc) about when the problem happens. also is getting more frequent and does it always start right back up.

has any work done around your ignition ever(does it have a remote starter or alarm with immobiliser). sometimes if the keyless entry/remote/starter/alarm modules are not secured to any frame and maybe wire tied to the bunch of wires under the steering column and that may loosen the wires from ignition. i have seen that happen.

Re: 99 SH. Car dies when driving then starts right back up...

try going to the honda owner link site and see if you have any recalls. https://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/login....Fprod_home.asp

I know the 97 had the ignition recall which would cause the car to die while driving. maybe you have that as well.

also if you get an o2 sensor try http://www.sparkplugs.com/ (pretty sure this is it)

they have plugs for about 40 bucks instead of 300 from autozone.

Re: 99 SH. Car dies when driving then starts right back up...

thank god someone finally said it...
i have a 1999 sh and my ignition was recalled...
i bet its never been taken care of on your car...

all you gotta do is call your local honda dealership and let them run your vin to see if the recall has ever been done.

Re: 99 SH. Car dies when driving then starts right back up...

You Might be lucky and it could even be as simple as this:

Someone helped my change my plugs and leads about a month ago and they didn't put the leads in the distributor cap properly and I had the same problem. So try that!

Good luck
