Exhaust Noise law

Hey guys, BC, Canada and recently a law came out, whether its been out for awhile and now is only be enforced, about loud exhaust. the law states that if your exhaust exceeds the a louder DB reading then the factory build muffler then you can recieve a 109 dollar ticket. They basically call it a public disturbance. I was wondering if any of you guys out in other places of a law that is similar to this. Oh and it also applies to motorcycles too.

Re: Exhaust Noise law

yeah those kind of laws are gay, so are emission tests, i can't ride my motorcycle to myrtle beach anymore because they have a noise ordinence there now, the sad thing about myrtle beach is that the factory police harleys are even too loud

Re: Exhaust Noise law

It's pretty standard in most places. Here it's 98dB(A) for pre 1991 build date, 90dB(A) for post 2001.

Basically if you behave yourself you're ok though. If you don't drive flat out everywhere you'll generally be ok.

Re: Exhaust Noise law

here in florida, its not even about noise.. They gave me a ticket for my greddy exhaust. The ticket said altered exhaust. I showed the cop that it wasnt even that loud and he said just having an altered exhaust is illegal.

Re: Exhaust Noise law

Technically any modification you do to your car is illegal, because you're altering it from the specification that it was certified compliant with your state/country's road rules. Regardless of what you change, there are always side effects; like changing to a CAI alters the way the engine runs, which alters the emissions. However most people aren't aware of this obsure notion.

Re: Exhaust Noise law

Ya some of the motorcycles that are out there are rediculously loud. I dont really care though but if people start becoming worried about these things the whole harley davidson industry may take a hit to their business as well as some other motorcycle companies in general. But ya i agree, if you just drive normal and dont floor it or rev or engine in very populated areas or late at night, cops wont normally pull you over.

Re: Exhaust Noise law

dang i'm really glad we dont have laws like that here, i checked my motorcycle with my little stereo Db checker that i got from walmart and it read 153 Db at 10,000 rpm, then i did it on my car and it read 128 Db and that was at 5,500 rpm, and both of these were done outside with the checker approximately 8-10 feet away! but i dont know how accurate that thing is exspeshally trying to read exhaust decibles

Re: Exhaust Noise law

Mrytle Beach is crazy especially during bike week. I hated it. I had an 01 ZX6R with a full Micron exhaust even had a stamp on the back of the muffler that read "Not for road use". The cops there will leave you alone but don't crack that trottle they will be on you like stink of $hit. I had a buddy we were in a parking lot not even moving he revs the motor to impress some girls (ha ha ha) he got what he deserved a $75 ticket on the spot he had to pay right then or go to jail. Crazy

Anyhow I live up here in Roanoke, VA and I think it is a decimal reading but is enforced by also looking at the type of exhuast once they have you pulled over for a loud exhaust, if the police here look and see an aftermarket exhuast they will ticket you for illegal equipment. But if you are driving normally along and not reving the motor to yet again impress someone then you should be fine just don't attract any unwanted attention to yourself and you should be fine.
