Why when your only revving at 2000 rpm in 4th gear are you switching into 5th? Or did I completely misread that. Super tired and cant sleep

Re: 5th gear grinds?

yea, its probably ur synchro. Guarnteed u dont even need to use ur clutch going from 4th to 5th at 2k rpms and thats why u dont here a grind.

what imeant is.. ONLY when i switch gears from 4t to 5th, THEN theres no grind. but when my rpm is at 3000 (normal swiching when im tryigto save gas), there is a grind..
so basically, when i want to witch to 5th, i'd have to take it off 4th, wait a second till the rm rops to 2000, and then switch to 5th in order for there to be no grind.

Re: 5th gear grinds?

honestly i have no idea when i changed m transmition fluid as i just bought the car about a month and so ago. so if i change the transmission fluid it should be fine?

my frind told me that using my gears to slow my down F**KS up my synchronizer. is that right? is that why my 5th gear is like this? cuz i slow down with my gears too much?

Re: 5th gear grinds?

Brake pads are cheaper than transmissions, do the math.

Also, go buy 2 quarts of Honda MTF and change your fluid. Change your oil if you haven't done so after buying the car as well.

I'm having the same problem with 4th gear...and the trans fluid is leaking, so im told it could be the the master or slave cyl.

Re: 5th gear grinds?

the 97 ludes had a manufacturing defect on the shift fork that caused 5th to grind.
not sure if it was on any other 5th gen

Re: 5th gear grinds?

Mine has the same problem, 5th gear always grinds.. I have to let off at a certain rpm so it wouldnt grind. It used to be worse before though. I had all gears stiff and 3rd used to grind too. then i changed my gear oil and added royal purple synthetic gear oil.. It helped ALOT.

Re: 5th gear grinds?

okay... well i actually had the same problem on my h23 tranny. 5th gear use to always grind.... i changed the fluid quiet often because of the grind. one day i on the highway i hit 5th gear it grinded hard... i didnt know what was wrong... i pull up at a friends house to take a look. i had no reverse or fifth gear....???? the 5th gear syncros and reverse idler gear are on the same shaft. i had to replace both... if your 5th gear goes.... replace both the syncros on 5th and your reverse idler. it is a common problem from when i did research on it.

Re: 5th gear grinds?

I had the same problem that Bustr had. I thought I was going to be first to save the day but he beat me to it. But yeah it's basically that. Keep in mind they will try to charge you a grip. Calling it a "Tranny Rebuild". I got conned like that, dont let it happen to you!

Re: 5th gear grinds?

okay changing fluid is cake. on your tranny you have two bolts that fit a 3/8 ratchet head in them. obviously the bottom one is for draining. the upper one is for filling. the upper one is a bitch to get the fluid in just have to be patient. jack the passenger side up. take the wheel off. find the two bolts undo the lower one first... then the upper one. it helps speed up the draining if you take the upper one out to. when done draining put the lower bolt...after wiping off all the gooo back in and tighten. i would put in ROYAL PURPLE GEAR FLUID. now there are two ways of filling. the upper bolt which i told you.... or from the top into a vent hole. if you use the vent hole... its located by the lower radiator hose...where it crossing over your tranny. it might have a black plastic cap on it. it looks like a thin tube sticking straight up. get some rags cause your gonna make a mess. get two containers of the ROYAL PURPLE GEAR FLUID.

if this dont fix your grind a lil bit. then you might have what im talking about.

Re: 5th gear grinds?

Never heard about filling it through the vent hole. Man that would make it a lot easier but make sure you don't over fill the last thing you want is froth in your trany

Re: 5th gear grinds?

I think yer oil is probably the culprit. My 01 grinded 5th and reverse, the fluid was a lil low, topped it off and everythings fine now. Change it out, if it keeps doin it might be the synchros.
