Burning lots of oil

I've researched this issue, and haven't found anyone else who is burning as much oil as me. It may sound crazy, but I'm honestly burning 5 quarts between oil changes. I tried using high mileage oil, and it still burns it away. I try to stay out of VTEC, but I probably get into it maybe 3 times a week. I have 148,000 miles on my car. My dad is a mechanic and says he thinks its the valve stem seals. We're thinking that its the rings too, but we're hoping not. I've tried searching for a leak too because I can't believe how much oil its really burning, but I can't find anything. If I leave the car parked in our driveway for a day, and then come back, there is no oil on the ground. What do you guys think? Should I be worried about the rings? Or could I get away with just a valve job? Or is there something else that we are missing? Thanks in advance.

And one more thing, the only time I really see smoke coming out of the exhaust is if I get into VTEC.

H is notorious for burning oil...and pray is not the rings

Re: Burning lots of oil

I know they are known for it, but I've seen most people say they burn around 1 quart between oil changes. The most extreme case I've seen is 1 quart every thousand miles. But mine burns the entire oil capacity between oil changes.

Re: Burning lots of oil

dude I have heard of people needing to put in a quart every other time they fill up at the gas station. If I had to take a bet I'd say its your rings, they're probaly fried...

And three times a week on VTEC? damn, I thought I was running my car hard doin it once a tank...

Usually I'm out of VTEC, at least now that I'm burning that much oil. It probably is the rings, but I'm praying that it won't be. And just doing a valve job would be pointless because once the engine is apart, I might as well get the rings done. If only I could find a JDM Redtop for cheap...

Re: Burning lots of oil

My motor was probably worse then yours then.. I was putting a quart of oil every time i'd go put gaz.. mine was burning so much oil that my back bumper was alll black from the smoke. I tried changing the valve seals, didn't do much, I was still buring oil like crazy. Right now I'm hoping to get my car back by the end of this week, this time with a JDM engine!

Re: Burning lots of oil

i'd say about every four times i get gas or maybe a little less often and i see clouds of oil boss out my exhaust (prob because i put a little excess in). and Vtec three times a week??? lol really..the way i think about it they put the Vtec in the car for a purpose so im going to use it. i consider beating on your car by not changing the oil not keeping up with maintenance, not shifting and staying in Vtec but thats just me. even with being run in Vtec almost every day my motor still pulls hard and strong

Re: Burning lots of oil

Excess VTEC will make you burn oil. I can go through 3 quarts if I use it a lot. If I don't, I can use less than a quart.
If Honda meant for you to stay in VTEC all the time, they'd set it to be permanently engaged. You can't expect to be tuning 8k rpms all the time and not expect to get more wear than someone who doesn't turn more than 3.5k.

Re: Burning lots of oil

Wow, I guess my problem is typical then. I thought 5 quarts was a bit much. And I know what you guys are saying about staying in VTEC and not shifting, but I try not to beat on my car, and I'm usually out of VTEC and shift around 3k.

Re: Burning lots of oil

I know often times it's better on the mind not to know... but have you done a compression test yet? Atleast you will know where you stand. I hit VTEC several times a week (not through all gears), I even AutoX my Prelude fairly often (staying in high RPM's constantly) but I only see about 1qt between oil changes, sometimes 2 at the very most.

Re: Burning lots of oil

well dang... i must be a lucky one... the oil time i was using oil was when my oil ring went bad in my turbo.... but other than that i didn't go through any oil during any oil change(no-turbo). hopefully my new engine wont leak... now... my g/f car(89 lx accord) burns through a quart every other week. but the valve guide seals are bad, it smokes a lot after it starts when its been sitting for more than 8 hours...

Yes, I forgot to mention that I have done a compression test. All of the cylinders tested out to 175 psi.

that could be bad rings in a cylinder but it could also be something simple like a leaky spark plug tube seal. whens the last time the valve cover gasket and tube seal gaskets were changed?

hmmm that seams a little low but not drastic. specially if they are all close to one another. does it tend to smoke more upon initial cold start up or all the time? if it seems to smoke more in the morning when the motor is cold it may be your valve seals.

I changed my valve cover gasket and spark plug gaskets about 3k miles ago. It doesn't just smoke it the mornings, it smokes constantly, but mostly in the higher rpms.

Re: Burning lots of oil

i think its all about fied piston rings.so for right now i would change the rings to loose this problem. but also it could be your scratched cylinders walls with. the best way to check it its to take your pistons off and head off.
