Newbie - Prelude Advice

Hello there,

My name is Alex, im 22, and currently have owned a MR2 MK1 for nearly two years. The time has come for me to part with it. I have my heart set on a 5th gen Prelude.

I am going to get a loan and sell my car at the end of March and get one. Now, i need advice on what to get and what not to get...

I have set myself a £2900-£3500 budget. I am ultimately looking for a low mileage example, not modified, manual. I really want a low mileage one as I am not keen on the prices people charge for cambelt changes.

As the MR2 is pretty pants with MPG, the 2.2 vti wouldnt be out of the question, but that will depend on my insurance issues too. 4 yrs NCB still doesnt get me a ticket for cheap insurance!

Again, the MR2 is extremely good round corners, but as the engine is behind all the time, is very loud (with aftermarket filter fitted). Is the Prelude smooth at gear change? Is it quiet (quieter). What is the handling like in the dry? And more importantly in the wet?

I am after a general outlook on what would suit me best. I really wanted to buy another RWD, but the Prelude looks absolutely gorgeous!

I need to know about parts and how much they cost, and this thing about 4WS? Does it go wrong, and if so will it break the bank getting it fixed?

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. I am not looking to buy the car from eBay. Private owner or possibly Garage will get my money.

Kind regards,

Alex

You like the 5th gen lude huh! Join the club! I will have my 5th gen here in a couple of months(hopefully one)! The car is quiet if you are not pushing it from what I have driven. The handling I believe is remarkable in both wet and dry. I feel it is a little more spongy in wet seasons in stock format, but still comfortable. As for 4WS, cannot tell you, do not have that option here in the US. I have heard it is a blast, and the it is worth it. Be warned though, being it is rare, it will cost you more than you have probably alotted. Since it is also a car that is out production, it is harder to find parts, and it is more costly to repair. When I test drove what I thought would be my next car(5th gen 99 Crystal blue metallic w/ 32k miles) on monday, I was rusty at driving a 5th gen(heavier clutch). But, I think that gear changes go really smooth. Keep in contact. If you have anymore questions and want more info PM me, my name is Scott.

Where do you live dude?
I've never driven a 4WS vehicle. I have heard of the electronic 4WS on 4th gens having it's share of problems. I don't know anything about it on 5th gens since it wasn't available at all in the US.
Handling just in stock form is awesome though, nice and tight. Do a search on here, there's a video of the JUN Prelude beating an S2000 in the touge.
The sound is pretty quiet, until you hit VTEC but even then, it's not real loud unless you have an A/M intake.
Part prices are moderate. Like Scott said, it's out of production so parts are rarer but most parts won't burn the bank down.
As far as the timing belt (cambelt as you call it), prices for changing vary depending where you are.

The 4WS was only available in Europe and Japan. It is extremely rare and very nice. I have only seen 2 or 3 for sale on the internet before.

I am from Essex in England!!! Don't know if you have heard of Southend at all? Home of the boy racers in Essex. I don't live there though lol.

What size are the stock wheels? On my MR2 14" tyres cost a lot more than 15"s! I Know 16"s are bloody expensive too. I know about parts costing lots, as my mr2 is the mk1. 1985! Toyota charge a bomb for little bits and pieces!

As for bodywork...is it prone to rusting? Weather in this country is ****e.

hey welcome to the site!

...Typical rust spots are the rear fenderwell, like all Hondas.

I def. know where Essex is, I travelled through there!

Damn Scott, If I were you I would have jumped on that deal especially if the car had a clean record.

Stock wheels on the 5th gen are 16". I never heard of any 5th gens with rust problems, the car probably aren't old enough for rust issues yet. If you live in an area with salty roads in the winter or live near the coast then I would keep it washed weekly.

They were asking $13556.38 with everything including possible trade in. That is way too high around here. Plus, there were too many scrapes and bumps for that car to be priced that high. There is a honda dealer trying to get $15 out of a 01 in blue with an auto and 84K miles, so I shouldn't complain. Lude13, get up more pics of that smokin' 3rd gen, that is hot! Think again Edge, I saw an ad for a 98 just like yours with an auto and 174k miles. Checked out, had rust on hood, trunk ,and fenders.

The 5th gen engines...are they interference engines? If yes, then obviously a cambelt (timing belt) snapping wouldnt be a huge problem.

Yeah, they're asking way too much for those Ludes you looked at. I test drive an '01 SH back in August '04 with only 22k miles and they were asking $16,000...so the '01 you looked at is overpriced bigtime! Don't pay more than loan value (even if it's clean) that's what I say.

I wanted the SH but the payments were going to be too much for me at the time. I'm happy with my '98 paid $10,400 in August '04 and making comfortable payments

^Yeah, there's some 4 lug 5th gens in Europe and the UK too but I wasn't 100% sure on the stock tire size.
