Axle boot ripped?

I was inspecting my car and noticed on the front passenger side there is a big rip in the boot. Not sure if thats the driveshaft or the CV boot but its a pretty big hole. Anyone got a DIY on replacing or a good source for a replacement? Any chance this could have happened because of a 2.5" drop?
Thanks

Re: Axle boot ripped?

inner or outer boot either way might be easier to change the whole thing....and the drop does put stress on the axleand the boots

Re: Axle boot ripped?

for the boot, just get the old one off, and put a new one on. if you use a split boot you dont have to take the axle out, i dont think. i have an inner split boot i'll sell you for 15 shipped.

Re: Axle boot ripped?

if you've lost a lot of axle grease or if you're hearing any popping, you will need to get the CV replacement kit...or the easy way is to just swap the whole axle for 2 hours time and $60 in parts. Pretty easy overall.

yes you do have to take the whole axle out to change just the boot. especially if its the inner boot thats torn because you have to repack it with grease. you're better off just swapping the whole axel. they're only like 35 bucks if you return them the old one. go to o'rilleys. they have lifetime warranties. i've had 2 free ones already. kinda nice.

and drops really don't place any stress on the joints themselves. they are designed to bend, hence the name joint. they don't flex any more then usual in a drop.. if anything they flex less because your suspension travel isn't as far

Re: Axle boot ripped?

yeah. what abel said. autozone or o'rilleys offer life time warranties. and if you return the old one they give you money back. just ask for the passenger side cv axel for what ever year your lude is

Re: Axle boot ripped?

Alright guys, bringing up a year old thread. Kudos to me for searching (: Anyway im assuming same goes for a 4th gen, if my boots are bad i should just buy new axles because its worth it? Will the new axles come with new boots? Thanks in advance. I crawled underneath my car today to get my old exhaust out, (skunk2 now) and i noticed grease sprayed everywhere on both wheels. My boots were shot :/
