Typical life of 5th gen? Common life expectancy?

Everyone in this forum seems knowledgeable on the technical side, so was hoping you guys could share some of it..

Was thinking about buying a 97 Prelude with 145k miles. Price is pretty decent, but worried about long term maintenance.

Heard that parts are on the rarer side, but is there anything I should know? How long will the car typically last for before it costs more to fix than it's worth?

The seller said that timing belt and transmission was changed already, so that might be worth at least a couple grand.

a/trans tend to be crap.. get a manual 5 spd.. also H22's when taken care of are amazing. they can run well past 200K miles. just change the oil.. belts and all maint when scheduled.. and she will love u back.

parts may be pricey by the books. but just find someone who can install them and get the parts from sites like these..and you'll get a good deal..

Re: Typical life of 5th gen? Common life expectancy?

I've heard stories of 300,000km old H22s having their head pulled and the bores looking like new. It really depends on how well they're looked after, but as said if they're looked after well they can go forever.

Re: Typical life of 5th gen? Common life expectancy?

211,000 Miles,
The head on my car is cleaner than steves old head with like a lot less than mine..
mine will run for a long time, the only thing that Old engines will need reguardless of how much you care for it is seals,
Mines burns a little oil,(excessive than normal, thanks guys!) but hey, that's fine.
needs new valve seals and a timing belt. ohhh well!

Lol. BTW Love the new sig E.

Back on topic, I'm sure you know that Honda engines in general are pretty good in terms of lifespan. As long as you're not trashing your car and redlining it allllll day. You'll get a while outta it. Love it and it'll love you back.

Re: Typical life of 5th gen? Common life expectancy?

Find out if the ball joints have been replaced yet or not. the 97 and 98's have bad ball joints, I've had to replace three of mine so far and I only have 87k miles on mine. It's not incredibly expensive to repair but it's not cheap either.

Re: Typical life of 5th gen? Common life expectancy?

Maintenance on Preludes will always be, but as far as figuring out how long a Preludes expectancy will be really depends on the driver.

It's logic that the more aggressive the driver beats on his Lude the shorter life it will be and more repairs will be done to it and the less it's being beaten on then the longer it will enjoy having you as it's owner!!!

I bought a 96 Prelude VTEC with 180k miles on it without thinking twice about the mileage.
