I can NOT get my axel nut off...please help

I have not been able to get my transmission in my car with the passenger CV/drive-shaft still installed so I have come to the conclusion that I have to get my CV/drive-shaft out so I can install my transmission in my Prelude.

I included pics but I figure it would be good to mention that the threads of the CV/drive-shaft have splintered and are impeding the nut from tightening or loosening...I tried to just loosen, then I heated it a little, then I thought tighten might dislodge the splinter of threads down and out of the way for the nut to come off....it didn't help. I very much want to get this off asap as it is holding me back from getting my car back on the road...I look forward to any recommendations. PreludeZone.com ROCKS!!! Cheers All.

Re: I can NOT get my axel nut off...please help

you have the correct axle nut socket correct? i believe its a 36mm and can be rented from an auto parts store if you don't, and put that on a 1/2" breaker bar.

now i know this might seem like its overkill, but i PROMISE you it's gonna be your best friend two seconds after you get home;
take the 1/2" breaker bar down to home depot, and buy a 6' long, i believe 1" OD steel pipe that can fit over the breaker bar, should be about $10.
leverage FTMFFFWWWW!!!!!

no nut or bolt will EVER be too tight for "the pipe". i take off axle nuts, crank pulley bolts, motor mount bots with EASEEEE!!

Re: I can NOT get my axel nut off...please help

o yea, you absolutely HAVE to take the axles out to take a tranny in or out.

you'll also need to put the wheel on (take the center cap out tho), put the car on the ground and in gear in order to prevent the car from moving. that's how much leverage your applying. if the car is still moving, simply have someone in the car pressing the brakes. viola, no more axle nut!!

Double posters FTL

Soak it in some WD40 and let that set for a minute or two, and use the 6' bar. The longer the bar the more the torque you can put on that nut in a quadratic (versus linear) fashion. Good luck getting your car running.

Re: I can NOT get my axel nut off...please help

or, we used liquid wrench, a impact wrench and a size like 42 socket bit

Edit, if you dont have a impact wrench use a ratchet with a size 42 socket and tap the ratchet with hammer while turning :D more like pound the ratchet but it will work

Re: I can NOT get my axel nut off...please help

had this problem a few months ago. my friend and i actually broke the breaker bar (had a pipe as well for the extra leverage), and the nut still didn't budge. only took about 5 seconds for an impact gun to get it off.

for those who might ask, the little square piece broke; where it would connect to the socket.

Re: I can NOT get my axel nut off...please help

from my past experience a 1" drive truck grade socket wrench is the way to go, they are about 5 feet long and you wont have to worry about it ever breaking. nicks way is good too but if your tools dont have a lifetime warranty i wouldnt. as for the chisel method, new axles usually come with new axle nuts so its ok to destroy the old one. impact wrenches are always good but not everyone has access to one.

Re: I can NOT get my axel nut off...please help

OK, I have my transmission out (got it out without taking off this nut), with the CV still in and I tried to get the transmission back in with the CV still there and it was not happening. I can only use the brakes to hold the CV as the transmission is already out so the nut and CV spins unless I have someone press the brake pedal.

I have a 1/2 ratchet, 34mm socket and the main bar for my floor jack as a "breaker bar" to help with leverage. The largest problem I think is the lower ball joint is popped and when I torque on the nut the whole suspension tries to flex forward which makes it hard to get a solid push on the nut. I also used a load of liquid wrench which didn't help. I tried to tighten the nut to maybe dislodge the splintered piece of the threads on the cv itself.

Re: I can NOT get my axel nut off...please help

I considered cutting it off with a dremel but I am planning on rebuilding this CV so I don't wanna mess up the thread so I can reuse after a rebuild. I don't really have a way to get a impact wrench and know that would be the simple way to get it done...I wish I had the cash to get a air compressor and impact wrench but I am not in the financial position to make it happen right now.

Addition...I have over 100 posts...sweet! :]

Re: I can NOT get my axel nut off...please help

i wouldnt rebuild it they are only 45 bucks at autozone for 4th gens. 5th gens should be about the same. take a pry bar and put it between the lug bolt studs to where when u turn the breaker bar the pry bar hit the ground and keeps it from spinning. thats how i did it by myself. i used a i"socket and a breaker bar. if that doesnt work just cut that s*** out and put in a new one. the reason i wouldnt rebuild it is because i caught my axles the day the boot ripped and replaced them the next day without driving on them. and as soon as i got it back together and my vtech kicked in it snapped my axle. taking them out and putting them back in causes alot of stress on them. its just easier and u r better off in the long run to just put in brand new ones.

X2

although when I had my bastard CRX there was no tool man made that would take the axle nuts off. It wouldn't come off holding brakes....broke 2 breaker bars with the pipe. my 300 pound cousin jumped up and down and it still would not come off. Tried every trick in the book!!!!!!!

Not even after being torched. (passenger or driver side) we were using so much force that the entire car was moving forward and spinning the front wheels because they would not budge. Half an hour with the impact gun on each side wouldn't do it either. Until I said out loud that I had it with the damn car and that I was going to junk the entire car (this was after a couple thousand invested in car) (couldn't take it anymore) well he heard me and got scared I guess and we went the next day and the damn nutz came off with my hands!!!

This car did this game off and on giving me a heart attack until I would threathing it with the Junk yard for about 3 years. until 4 thousand dollars later I couldnt take it anymore and sold it for 1300 bucks and got my 5th gen lude!!!!!

Moral of my long a** story.....your axle nut can't be that bad!!!!
