Gas mileage

Hi, I just got my 98 prelude SH stick. I always heard that preludes get really good gas mileage but my best was 23.5 miles per gallon and average around 21-22 m/g. I usually shift at 3000rpm and rarely pass 4000rpm. Can anyone give me any tips on how to get better gas mileage on my car?

Re: Gas mileage

lol. thats good advice. no but all kidding aside. 23.5 is about normal for ludes. the best thing to do is keep up on your routine maintenance, intake filter, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, oil changes, run some fuel system cleaner once in a while. or seafoam does the trick.

Re: Gas mileage

the only preludes that actually get good mileage from what i know are the ones before the 4th gen. 4th and 5th gens get normally from 20 to 25. my first lude was a 87 2nd gen 2.0 si 5 speed. it had a a20a1 and got about 30 to 34 mpg. while my new 4th gen with a h22a4 swap gets about 20. newer preludes weight quite a bit which helps with making the gas mileage not as good. and they have bigger engines than the more fuel efficient civic. which is one of the reasons civic are way more popular than prelude.

about 3/4 of my mileage is city. i drive about 80mph on highway, 4000rpm for my car, which i know isn't good for my mph.

Re: Gas mileage

My lude gets about 27.5 MPG averaging city and highway. I hadn't cleaned my air filter for quite a while (pretty much all winter) and was getting crappy MPG and after doing that I gained my MPG back again. I'd start with just checking basic things, air filter, check the spark plugs condition, etc... maybe you're leaking gas?

Re: Gas mileage

Most efficient driving speed for most mid-size sedans is 50-60mph, I would guess going 80 would actually hurt the overall mpg with a stock engine.

I took a long highway trip once and was trying to squeeze as much out of a tank as possible. I think I made it 410 miles before I chickened out and stopped. Glad I did because I had .2 gallons left. Anyway, I can manage 27-28 from my H23 if I'm nice, 25 if I'm not

best way to get better milage from a lude,
Join us 3rd gen'rs. even with my lead foot, I get 28 avg. but i also keep it below 70 most of the time (I dont like supporting the sedgwick county retirement fund) & usually shift below 4K.

h23 is far superior in mpg compared to h22, my sister got like 32 mpgs in her h23 4g and I get like 23-25 usually.

Re: Gas mileage

well this was my first time posting and so i didn't know that we couldn't post a thread on gas mileage. the mod can go ahead and delete this thread. also, i kept reading people getting like 30mpg on their prelude and i was only getting 21mpg and so i was just wondering if i was doing something wrong since my mpg was so horrible compared to other people's prelude. i was curious, that was all.

2001, 197,000 miles, original Auto tranny, Worst 23, best 29, (techie), I check mileage every fill up, most tanks above 26.
I get in the VTEC a couple of times every tank full to blow the carbon out (and a cheap thrill) and make sure the VTEC still works. I have 16" wheels with 215R55's. Great Ride! I just received KYB's to attempt to get rid of the rear shock knock. Tried all the other solutions in the forum post.

If you cruise in neutral you're still using gas. If you cruise in gear you don't use any gas you will slow down faster though. That's would be an interesting experiment.

Re: Gas mileage

i've read that before. but i don't believe it. a friend of mine has a wide band on his car. it still registers an A/F ratio when he's cruising in gear. granted its a bit on the leaner side then keeping a constant speed. its around 14 or 15:1. as opposed to like 12:1 while he's driving.

I get 32 mpg.

If your EGR has never been cleaned, I promise that's robbing some of the potential.
Also try getting a new fuel filter and make sure you ALWAYS run premium fuel.
