Do you use protection?

Hey guys,

So in 2 months me and the gf will be moving up to Alaska (she's from there, and I've been going up there fishing my whole life), and leaving my lude at my parents house for the 1-2 years I am planning on living up there.

Here's my question: My parents have a lot of trees on their property near where my car will be parked, so does anyone know of a good/cheap car cover for our cars? I don't mind spending $50-100, but I would prefer to keep it on the low end if possible, though I have never bought a cover so I have no idea how much they cost.

When I was in college and left my Camaro at their house and when I came back a few months later it was green from the trees. I don't want that to happen to the lude, especially since I wont be back until Christmas.

Thanks for the help,

Cameron

Re: Do you use protection?

sew a bunch of old sheets together?

The guy i bought my prelude from gave me a custom cover his friend made for him. Its pretty nice and I put it on at night after a fresh wash. It keeps the dew and pollen off when the wind blows.

The only downside is what neighbors think. In my neighborhood, people find it ugly to look at a car with a cover on it and try and get you in trouble with the city. (mainly the stuck up pricks)

Re: Do you use protection?

haha that's exactly what I was thinking until I read the whole post...haha...tarp also works...=P just make sure to get two atleast, just incase one rips..and take offf the wheels and put it on jack stands and take the negative connector on the battery off, store your wheels in a safe place and make sure you jackstands are on atleast a plywood if your parking you car on dirt. That's what I had done for a friend when he asked me to watch his car...I pretty much just took it to the back yard and did those steps and after a year and half, it was in the same condition and no one could steal it cause no wheels. :D And also disconnect all the fuses...jk jk.. well good luck man, hopefully nothing bad happens to the car.

good idea man also get some fuel saver and put it in the tank and make sure you low on gas when ya finally put it up. Also i would but some kind of rodent repellent around the car and in the engine bay. Would suck to come back wanting a drive and have chewed up wires.

Re: Do you use protection?

make sure your cover is weather proof and can breathe, make sure it is secured very well use moth balls all around inside and out. put some mouse killer in as well just don't put it where a pet can reach it but when you pull it out of "storage" let it air out real good the moth balls shouldn't hurt your interior but i would put it in a open plastic container (spray paint caps come to mind) and use something on all your weatherstripping to keep it soft
trust me mine sits all winter and most weekdays...its like driving a new car every time I'm in it
but hey good luck in your storage when you buy a cover ask if it has something to prevent mold/mildew growth
and just a (thow it out ) last minute note pull your battery keep it it the house somewhere warmer and dry not on concrete tho
and put it on a trickle charge to freshen it up when you are ready to drive
have a great time in alaska

Re: Do you use protection?

I usually do tarp + car cover. Car covers can get holes and be torn apart by the weather. Putting a tarp under it can't hurt.

And where at in alaska? I lived there for quite a few years. I was in wasilla, fairbanks, and anchorage.

Re: Do you use protection?

um...Car cover..then two layers of tarp. Mouse trap all around the car, bear traps next to the doors, set up some C4's about 50 meters just incase someone approaches the car and if so the c4 will explode and scare off the jacker. Make sure to get some good quality rope and tie the covers + tarp just to be safe. And don't forget the battery, Don't park next to plants cause they can start growing around your car and the next thing you know is, they're all up in your engine bay and what not. Sorry for grammer but I'm half asleep and this is the last post I'm gonna attempt to finish before going to sleep. But yea once again. Good luck with everything and Alaska. Last reminder...DON'T FORGET THE C4's! ;)

Re: Do you use protection?

Thanks for all the input guys, sorry for those of you expecting something about condoms..but it sure got a lot of you guys to comment in my post

My parents/family will drive my car occasionally I am sure, as my mom has a 99 accord (same chilton manual as my 00 lude), my sis has a 96 accord, and both can drive 5 speeds. I will make sure to disconnect the battery, but other then that it should be fine for 6 months till I come home for a few weeks.

To answer Smok3y, we are moving to Anchorage; on government hill to be precise. How long did you live in AK? My great grandparents lived on the Kenai since before I was born so I've been visiting Anchorage and Soldotna my whole life, and I've also spent a little time in Homer.
