2 possible problems :/

Well I just got my car back from a shop friday, they replaced my head gasket, had the head re-machined, and replaced the water pump, timing belt, and the other two or three things little things that I can't remember right now...

So... the car's great and all, it sure accelarates a lot faster than I can remember, but it doesn't feel like it has VTec. The car doesn't seem to pull any harder after ~5250 rpm and it may be getting a littttttle louder (or my head may just be making it seem that way because I want it to).
Could they have possibly hooked something up wrong or ... something else?

And then today on the way home, I hit 90 for the first time since all the service i've had done and the very second, I was even watching the speedo, that it crossed from 89 to 90 I got a CEL. I am probably going to reset the battery and if it comes back up then i'll take it to an AutoZone or something where they can read the CEL code.

Sorry, that's quite a lot to read, but I appreciate the help.

I have a 98 Base Auto.

Ha yeah, the only thing that was getting me is that through all the rpms it accelerates a LOT faster than it used to.

Re: 2 possible problems :/

wow we've gotten wayyyy off topic, sorry OP

your vtec may very well not be hooked up. first thing you should do is check your oil level. you will most DEFINITELY know when vtec kicks in, its extremely distinct.

and for the CEL, we can't help you w/o knowing what the code is.

You should make sure ur car's always warmed up before u try 2 hit vtec!!!
Make sure the oil level is good.
If ur car's warmed up and still no vtec there is a CHANCE they knocked the wiring loose or something.

Re: 2 possible problems :/

Thanks, I just added oil about a day before all the servicing, i'll check again this afternoon.

And I wait until the car is warm to try and hit VTec, but it still has no noticable change.

I also have a question, before I go to a shop today to have them check the CEL.. It came up right as the car went from 89>90, is there any chance that checking the CEL or anything could tell him, as well as my dad, that I went 90mph? I've never seen how a CEL is checked, so i'm pretty nervous.

Is there some kind of CEL anyone knows of that would come up for the car going way too fast or anything like that?

Re: 2 possible problems :/

^No it's not gonna show that u were going 90. The CEL comes on when ur ECU detects a problem with how the car is running it reports it but it doesn't show how fast u where going or anything.

Be safe though man

Re: 2 possible problems :/

Yeah thanks, i've learned from my past ignorance. There's actually an abandoned road a few miles away that my friends and I hang out at, it's about 3/4 mile long and really straight. That's the only place I ever do more than 5+ the speed limit anymore.

And I had the CEL checked today, it came up P1259, which is "Vtec system malfunction", which totally turns what was 2 possible problems into 1. The guy at the shop checked all the wires and they were tight, so he looked it up on the computer and it said to turn off the car, clear the code, and start it up and let it sit until the fan comes on then drive it around.

The CEL didn't come back on, but I DIDN'T go back up to 90 anywhere, so i'm thinking it would. And I am 99% sure I still don't feel Vtec.
