Rear View mirror snapped off, quick question

Should be an easy fix but I don't want to break anything...again. My rear view mirror snapped off, the screw is still attached. I don't think anything is physically broken. I need to remove the cover where the inside dome light is, it is about 5 X 6 inches. Do I just pull it off? Are there tabs I need to press in? I broke a plastic tab on a car before so I am hesitant to assume it just snaps off. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA, David

Re: Rear View mirror snapped off, quick question

the light fixture is screwed in. pop off the translucent plastic lens. there is a small grove between the lens and the fixture. you can stick a small flathead in there and gently pry it out. there are 2 screws in there. take those out. and the light assembly will fall down. the large plastic square is held in by 2 clips in the front and 3 pivots in the back. you don't have to worry about saving those clips. if you break them the screws will still hold the whole thing in place.

Re: Rear View mirror snapped off, quick question

takes a little effort. i think my 97 came off from rear of the car direction. ie hinge point to the front of the car. may have been side to side. i think there's a small notch to pry from. it's been a while so i may be wrong there. but it should pry out with a bit of help from freddy the flathead.

careful not to tear the headliner with a screwdriver.

Everything is always so easier the second time. On mine I used one of the smallest flat heads. A dull razor might have been the cleanest. Thanks for the reply!

An inexpensive artists palette knives have gotten me into an awful lot of places. They are available in various sizes, thicknesses, range of stiffness and shape of the point. They can be "custom" bent for a specific need and then bent back to original shape as well.
