Red Key? Ignition Key Question

Have a Bud that lost his one and only ignition key. (5th Gen / 2001) Went to the dealer for a replacement. Dealer tells him he needs either the "Red Key" or the entire ignition lock chip reader needs to be replaced in the column.

Can anybody tell me if this is crap, or for real? What is the red key he's referrring to? Can't the column chip ring / reader be scanned with a scan tool for the key chip code?

He's looking at over $500 for a replacement and 2 keys if he can't have a key made.

I'm sure he'd appreciate any advice I can give him to help save him some bucks..

Thanks guys..

Re: Red Key? Ignition Key Question

I dont know how ur supposed 2 have the red key in the first place(maybe somebody else will). But I had a problem like that....kinda. I had 2 buy the whole ignition cylinder and they gave me a set of keys with it. Cost me 500(like u said) then they said they gotta program the key. And it costs 100 dollars more. Wtf?? But I cant really answer ur question if its crap or not. But I still have the whole ignition cylinder and the keys(got my old one working again). If all else fails with ur friend I'll sell him mine and the keys for alot cheaper than 500

Re: Red Key? Ignition Key Question

the red key is proivided with all hondas purchased - occassionally the red key is lost when cars are sold on but occassionaly some people do keep them and pass them on when you purchase the car - this red key is never to be used to start the car as it contains the coding to program a new key - when you give the dealers the red key they can very easily make you a copy but if you dont have it then prepare to be bent over and rear ended.

Re: Red Key? Ignition Key Question

I broke my only key for my lude right before I got deployed. So I sent my key to my uncle (he works for chevy, and knows guys at honda). Well I got a new key cut and chipped for 60$ and it works just fine. My uncle took my vin # and the info on the car.

I don't know what price you'll be given. But I don't have the red key, cause my car is a repo.

They also wanted to charge me 500$ to do the setup at the local honda dealership.

Re: Red Key? Ignition Key Question

i am a locksmith and the red key is to allow you to program new keys. if you go to a local locksmith or the dealer they can cut you a key on a t5 cloneable key for about 35 bucks but that is only if you have a working key already.

If you have an old key they can code it with that. I had mine done at Billy Craft Honda for $60. Thats just to have the key made. So yeah I would say if you don't have the old key plus you don't have the red key your screwed.

Re: Red Key? Ignition Key Question

All fine if you have a working key or even a broken key (RFID chip would still be cloneable and they can cut it from the VIN). The OP had no keys though. So the lesson would be to get your key cloned before you lose it if you only have one.

me too, I never got the red key from the previous owner, I am the third owner so I bet the original owner has it somewhere in their kitchen drawer or desk drawer somewhere in the house. Or they found it after they sold the car and tossed it in the trash.
