Tiptronic transmission jolts/slips when cold

When cold my tiptronic gearbox jolts harshly into gear from a stationary position when Reverse, D4, D3, D2 or D1 is selected, I wouldn't have thought this would do the engine moutings any good. When the vehicle is moving there is a late shift between 1st and 2nd with a jolt. The gears slip but not so much from 1st to 2nd, 3rd to 4th seems to be by far the worst especially if you put your foot down. Once the engine/transmission gets hot the problems seem to improve quite a bit, almost disappear, still a slight jolt and almost no slippage. My local Honda dealer drained and refilled the transmission 3 times. The drained oil was black in colour with no burnt smell. The oil change made no improvement what so ever. The vehicle is a 2000 W plate 2.2 vti Tiptronic with 104,000 miles on the clock. If anyone has any sensible recommendations it would be much appreciated. Could it be a solenoid valve sticking some where when cold that improves with an increase in temperature? Any internal worn clutch plates etc? Could it be a partially clogged filter, flow of oil increasing as it warms up? Can the filter be easily removed for inspection?

Have the trans serviced. New oil, etc should fix most of that. But they all jolt a bit when cold, including mine.

lol.. or do what i did and drop some cash and swap to manual.

they all say it's a pain but really its not that bad.. you could do it for less than 2 grand. But as for your tranny.. i'm not saying your tranny is done, but i'm pretty sure your tranny is done. fluid changes aren't going to change a thing.. i tried that.. i know people who have just got new/rebuilt auto trans and had the same problem 20 or 30K miles down the road. and honestly a rebuilt auto will cost you somewhere in the 1500 range.

do the swap.. she's more fun to drive with a real stick.

So, basically I have this exact same problem. Tranny does not wanna work right when cold started. Once I hit temp it shifts perfectly. I do not have the money to get any sort of transmission and don't want to mess with a manual swap right now. Like the original posts. Solenoids? clutch plates? any one have any clue as to why it will only perform well at temp. I have ZERO shaving in the fluid, and changed it to make sure again. It has done this for about 40k miles now, sitting at a solid 160k miles with the original tranny in it.

Could there just not be enough fluid and only works right when the fluid is expanded? I don't know anything about transmissions.

^^YES^^

Do the 5 speed swap. My tranny does the same thing, its shot! I'm about to start the swap any week now (as soon as I get some free time) I have every single part I need (well the flywheel and pressure plate bolts are being shipped as we speak) and got everything for less than $700.00. I'm doing it all in my garage myself and its gonna be a bitch...but so well worth it when it's done. I cant wait!

Re: Tiptronic transmission jolts/slips when cold

Craigslist baby! I actually got very very lucky. I found someone with a 99 5 speed base with 74k on it that was parting it out because it was in hiding because the Repo men were looking for it. I got pretty much everything I needed from that one guy.....And he Delivered it!!! From 4 hrs away!!!! (it ended up taking him like 5 1/2) All For $450.00 cash money!! He needed money quick and he had to get rid of the car quick. I told him what I needed and he took it off the car and two days later he drove it right to my house. I got the tranny with all mounts and sensors, shifter cables, shifter assembly w/boot and shift knob, manual ECU, Manual complete gauge cluster with 74k on it, flywheel, half shaft, master cylinder with all the lines, clutch pedal, brake pedal, and I cant think of what else, some hardware and he even gave me the ashtray and speaker cover I needed. I just needed to buy a clutch and I bought a lightweight flywheel. And Majestic Honda is sending me the flywheel and pressure plate bolts right now, should have them by tomorrow. Yeah I got lucky, but I still have a lot of work ahead of me.
I usually hear people say they got the whole job done parts and labor around $2200.
But...to rebuild an auto tranny its gonna cost around $1900 and I've heard A LOT of people say that after the rebuild it starts doing the same thing again 30-60k miles later and they are in the same place they started. Plain and simple - The auto transmission that Honda built for these cars pretty much Suck! Plus driving it as a standard is soo much better! I'd really consider looking into it if I were you, you may get lucky and find someone that got into a wreck and totaled there car and the parts are still good. You just gotta do some good searching.

I will take some pictures, but I don't think I will have time enough to do a whole writeup. There is lots of good write ups on this already. Here is a real good one that I got a lot of helpful info from.
