97 Prelude Headlight Problem... please help!

Hey guys, I am new on this forum and am looking for some help with a used Honda Prelude I just purchased.

For some reason the Front 2 headlights won't turn off during the day...

When the car is on, the headlight switch will be turned off. yet, the 2 front headlights and the sidelights will still be on.

can anyone help me out with this? I am afraid the car won't pass smog and light checks and I need to get it registered asap.

oo and also the fog lights on the bottom of the bumper will not come on at all... :/

any insight will be appreciated.

umm..do you live in canada? or close to it? maybe this car was imported. either way it sounds like a canadian model with DRL. its a law that all canadian cars have to have there lights on at all times with DRL as standard so you actually have no control over it really

Re: 97 Prelude Headlight Problem... please help!

I live in Southern California. The last person who owned the car lived in the bay area.. I believe.

When I contacted him about the problem, he did say he had the Headlights replaced... I am not sure how I could go about checking/fixing the problem.

How would I know if the car is Canadian? Or maybe if it has re-wiring problems?

plus.. the fog lights won't come on at all... starting to get a bit frustrating.

I believe if your serial number part of the VIN begins with 8, it is a Canadian model.

So your VIN would read something like: JHM BB6 14 * V C 8000001

If it is, then Steve is spot on with the DRLs. If not...then you would have to do some good ol' searching and testing to find out where the change to the circuit is. My vote would be in one of the 2 fuse panels or at the headlights themselves.

If they turn off at night with no problem, and it is NOT a canadian model, it sounds like it has an aftermarket photocell installed. You would have to look for a small (usually black and bubble shaped) sensor installed around the windshield border. It's not likely to have that so I am gonna vote Canadian lude.

Either way, it should pass inspection even if it is in Cali.

Re: 97 Prelude Headlight Problem... please help!

I just ran out and checked the VIN number, no 8 in there at all. So not Canadian...

I am gonna go ahead and start looking for the problem in the wiring..

However since this is my first Prelude, I am a total noob.. you mentioned there are 2 fuse panels? where would these be located?

Anything I should NOT mess/tamper with?

Thanks, again for the help guys!

There is one fuse panel under the hood by the fire wall on the passenger side. These are all the circuits that have constant power regardless of if the car is on or not. There are headlight relays here too. THe other fuse panel is under the dash board driver's side. Most of these circuits activate when the key is turned to accessory or ignition. Can you take a picture of the fuse panels covers and post so I can read the labels? I still think it is a Canadian model for some reason.

Don't touch any airbag, SRS, or bright yellow loomed stuff. That's bad.

go to the Online Manuals section and download the electrical chapter 23. open it and go to page 69 and that will show you the wiring diagrams for your headlights. plus it shows the difference between the canadian model and the us.
