ignition or timing belt?

as some of you know my prelude has been sitting for a while. its been about a month since its even been started. i went to go start it today. the battery is shorted out so i had the scion hooked up to it. no matter how long i let it sit it just wont turn over fast enough to start. well just ONCE it finally kicks over enough to get combustion. a few cylinders fire and i let go of the key and it dies. i go to start it again and the engine is spinning like mad but its not starting.... i'm hearing what sounds like its trying to start like only one cylinder is firing. i smell a gas smell coming out of the exhaust so i know i got fuel. (possibly to much though after so many tries) i'm thinking if the ignition went out on me then thats less of an electrical load making it easier for the starter to work. but also if the timing belt is broke that makes less drag on the engine giving it freedom to spin easier. the fact that i'm hearing one cylinder firing is argument for both. cuz if one of the intake valves is open that one will TRY to fire at least. so i'm gonna spend this weekend trying to figure it out.

now i got one question. the distributor cap is directly driven by the cam shaft right? so if the timing belt is broke then the distributor cap wont spin correct?

i'm pretty sure its timing belt... but i only got 83k

yea, the dizzy is DIRECTLY driven by the cam, so i'm thinking your t-belt is fine.

when the engine is running, does it run very rough, like its about to die, or it does die?


it kinda sounds like a problem w/ the starter to me, since you said it doesn't crank fast enough.

It's also right at 10 years old, so that could be argument for the t-belt.

Your tensioner could have taken a crap though. The BOLT (not belt) snapped on my dad's and it sounded very similar to what you're describing. The mechanic who fixed it showed it to us no idea how or why it did.

This is true, I just had my timing belt done and my tensioner was leaking oil or fluid, so once it leaks down enough it will allow the belt to jump a tooth, so you might have a timing issue but not the belt. I'd take the valve cover off and inspect the belt and tensioner. Be prepared these parts aren't cheap.

Also the starter wouldn't hurt to pull that thing off and have it checked at a local Auto Zone or Advanced Auto. Both places don't charge anything to check them.

if you do suspect the timing is off, pop the crank pulley and valve cover off and make sure EVERYTHING is @ TDC.

my bolt is stuck inside my shortttttttttt block! damn auto tensioners.....got a mint manual tensioner.

btw if it was over tightened woudlnt the belt shred??

i'm talking about the crank pulley bolt getting overtightened, not the actual t-belt.

well what ever it was its working now. i went out there again today and tried to start it and it kicked over a few times and then died again. so i pulled the plugs off and they were saturated with fuel. i put my nose down into the spark plug hole and i could smell a lot of fuel. i put the spark plugs against the header and hit my remote start and watched the spark and sure enough it sparked. so i let it air out for a while.

i went to go start it again. i felt it kick a few times so i held the starter for about 10 seconds and slowly it got better. kept doing it in 30 second intervals while pushing the gas down every now and then. and eventually it finally started and held its own. i think it is just bad gas. probably has some water in it. the gas tank is pretty low. its sitting just below a quarter tank and its been like that for over a month. so i'm gonna fill it up with some good gas and see what happens.
