Under the hood cleaning

My eningine looks way dirty and the underside of my hood is basically black. Any ideas on good cleaning products for both or ways to clean it easily without spending all day on it?

Re: Under the hood cleaning

WD-40 [soak the **** outta all wiring.]
Engine Degreaser [any of your liking]
2 plastic bags [shove under the sparkplug cover on the side & the other cover the alternator]

& a Power Wash

Spend about 30minutes and you're squeaky. :)

Re: Under the hood cleaning

+1 on simple green! They also have something called "gunk" at autoparts stores. You spray it on and just hose off (just cover all electrical stuff)

Re: Under the hood cleaning

Personally, I stay away from using a pressure washer. Don't take the easy way out, just take a bottle of Simple Green and a rag, and go to town. I find that a bottle of carb and throttle body cleaner (The one with the little straw) is amazing at cleaning those hard to reach places.

I don't think a pressure washer is the easy way out persay...It will just blow away caked or baked on dirt and grease that would be really hard to get off by hand.

Yes, however, our engine bays weren't designed to be subjected to that kind of pressure. I'm not saying "DON'T PRESSURE WASH YOUR ENGINE!", what I am saying is that you can be much more cautious and just as accurate doing it by hand. I've seen too many cars not start even after covering air intakes, dizzys and fuses for me to EVER suggest it.

Yea that make sense...But I race motocross and I know that there is some stuff, at least on those, that just can't be gotten off by hand after it cakes and bakes on for a while...

Re: Under the hood cleaning

Kaboom, ha ah hah ahwhaa thats funny have you tried it? I agree with simple green thats what we used in the Army cleaning our trucks for inspection, and we had mad mess on the trucks. We did pressure wash them but they were a bit less timid than our Ludes.

After its clean some people use a silicone, I havn't cleaned under my hood in about two years and it still looks good underneath.

Re: Under the hood cleaning

I go to a self car wash leave the engine running and keep the washer a got foot or more from anything not metal ,spray it with the degrease they have and then go back home and get the stuff it misses but with a power washer take your time just dont got at it like a drunk prom date.
This is how mine came out after 5 mints with at the car wash
