Remote Start?

So I've had a remote start kit basically wasting away in my closet, and I'm really interested in installing it. I've got an 01 Prelude 5-speed. I know places won't normally install any remote start on a 5-speed due to liability issues, but are there any how to's that you guys know of that may help me put it in?

Thanks,
Made

Re: Remote Start?

i found a coupla places to install remote starts on manuals, you just gotta call around and ask them.

personally i'm not too confident in my ability to install an entire alarm/remote start so i'm leaving it to the pro's. but if you think your down for it, by all means go for it.

So the man that can chuck down beer at 1/16 the speed of light is scared of a few wires .

What kind is it if it's not a good reliable one then sell it and get a good one. PIA when the cheap one mess up and they will mess up. The only things i can think of that would be different would you need to jump the clutch safety switch so the car thinks it's always pressed and the immobiliser the lude has stock.

Re: Remote Start?

i think they mean liability issues as to if he leaves the car in gear and it gets damaged he can sues them for installing it and hence causing damage.

Re: Remote Start?

alarms arent hard to install at all. you spend more time searching for the right wires then actually cutting and soldering em. you can look on a few websites and they will have the wiring diagram for your car. i think 12volt.com maybe. check it out. you might save yourself a few hundred bucks doin it yourself. and you could learn somethin

Re: Remote Start?

Re: Remote Start?

See that's what I thought. I've heard of people having to purchase a bypass module that is car-specific...however if its a 5-speed...you would think they wouldn't sell one for it...

But what do I know...that's why I'm on here ;)

Re: Remote Start?

I have a 99 SH and i have R/S alarm from viper

IT is illegal in almost every state to have R/S on a manual for yes you leave it in gear it will Jump which could cause damage to surroundings and car

there is a module to work with every car that is newer then basically 93ish
its the same for auto or manual most of the time it has more todo with the stock alarm keyless and lights. newer cars have two options leave a key with a chip in it or one that you program the chip in module older cars didnt need the key part just the module for flashing lights and keyless part, If you have not done a R/S i wouldn't try but anyone that has would know how to wire it up it basically is one more wire that grounds the clutch signal out allowing it to start with out the key in the ignitions senser so in any gear it will jump to idle and move if left in any gear but would die shortly unless on hill, Last step would be to tune the idle so it R/S it can tell if there is a problem and wouldnt stay on, most higher end R/S have this function so that you can run a turbo timer with alarm system and so forth

I worked for best buy for 2 years in the install bay i bet y9ou can find a car audio installer that would do it under the table

While it is not hard, if you do i would recomend using a mercury switch not the hood pin less problems with it failing or wearing out on you causing problems staying on or arming orsetting the alarm off if you have that function

Re: Remote Start?

While I agree with you, All of the [new] DEI alarms I know of allow you to set the tachometer sensing and/or the voltage sense on the R/S.

I do not, will not, nor have not promoted installing a remote start, designed for an auto transmission, in a manual car such as most of ours; that is irresponsible. BUT, there are ways to work with it. And do it safely.

Re: Remote Start?

i agree you should think really hard if you want it and why, cons vs pro's
and i will admit cons always out rule the pro's on this

if you leave your car in gear all the time or let others drive your car... i wouldnt even think about it, if you are only going to use it for winter buy the mercury switch and disconect it for most of the year and use only during the season you need to warm the car befor driving
