Crazy starter question

1st thing is 1st: I'm a bit of a layman so take it easy. I have a 1997 Prelude Base with a H22A JDM engine dropped in it. The 5 spd trans is stock US. I have been having some trouble finding a starter for it since the old one went bad. I pulled the old one and tested it myself and the bendix spins but doesn't pop out. I went to autozone to grab a new one and the one they had for a manual trans had a different looking bendix. So the guy figured that the H22A originally had an auto trans and we looked up the part and it had the right looking bendix so I went with it. Well, the screw holes won't line up and I am starting to wonder if it is possible that I could have a manual starter with an automatic starter's bendix. Is that a possibility or could it just be that the engine was from another year from Japan and I need to look @ different year's starter for my lude? Or am I overlooking something else? I want my car to start sooner rather than later but if it comes down to it ill have the starter rebuilt as a last resort. Thanks for any input.

Re: Crazy starter question

not really familiar with the starter for the auto but I know there are certain aftermarket flywheels that have a different tooth alignment. I would think if you have an usdm tranny the usdm starter is the correct one. I am thinking it is the flywheel that is different. Which JDM h22a is it? (1-8) I am not sure but I believe that also may play a role in which tranny fits it.

Re: Crazy starter question

I know that the only thing that changed when the previous owner did the H22A swap was he installed an Stage 1 Clutch and CAI. I know he didn't swap the flywheel. Idk which H22A it was i do know its JDM and the date code on the head is for Jan 1995.

The starter itself says HONDA P5M on it and also "Mitsuba" "12V - 1.6 Japan" "SM-42227"

One thing a friend of mine noticed that only 2/3's of the teeth on the starters bendix was used and I could see by the wear on the flywheel that the bendix and the flywheel didn't meet 100%. Is that normal or u think someone rigged this starter in there? After thinking a bit it's possible that the one for the manual may have been right but I need to get my hands on it and see if the bolts line up and if the bendix pops out farther. I think I'm doing the right thing here but again any input will be appreciated because I am totally winging this.
