Final Drive gear for 01 SH

What exactly does a final drive gear do? Does it give me a sixth gear? Also does anybody know where I can find one for a SH? None of the ones I have found fit an SH.

Re: Final Drive gear for 01 SH

A final drive kit only changes the final drive ratio of the transmission. It does not give you an extra gear. For example, going from an OEM 4.266:1 FD to a 4.714:1 FD is a 10.5% lower (numerically higher) final drive. This means that in each gear, for a given land speed, your engine will rotate 10.5% faster. Say your current setup turns 4,000 RPMs at 80 MPH. With the new FD, your engine will be turning 4,420 RPMs at 80 MPH.

The final drive ratio affects all gears, except reverse, but it does not affect the spacing between gears. i.e. the RPM drop during shifting will be the same.

Re: Final Drive gear for 01 SH

There is no off the shelf FD for the SH, but Houseman can make you one. Last time I checked his FD kits ran about $1,250 to $1,500.

Re: Final Drive gear for 01 SH

Personally I think 4k rpm's is way too high at 80 mph. If I go any faster than 70mph (3.5k rpm) on the freeway I start to burn gas. It hurts when I drive my mom's avalon and it's at 80 mph at 2.5krpm =(

Re: Final Drive gear for 01 SH

I was just using those numbers as an example. I have no idea what a typical Prelude turns at 80 MPH as the gearing has been changed a little in my track car. :)

Re: Final Drive gear for 01 SH

I get my race tires from a specific Discount Tire. He gives me decent pricing, so I run a set of stickers for him. If you're in Texas, I can send you his way, and he'll make you a good deal on tires.

Re: Final Drive gear for 01 SH

To the OP...I'm just a little curious...why do you want to change your FD ratio?
