this is driving me crazy.....

ok so I have done a ton of research on this and I even took my car to the dealership in West Chester and still donít know what to do...

This all started about a two weeks ago. When warmed up (never cold) I noticed my oil light was coming on at idle and then blinking when the gas has been applied. About the same time I noticed that my car has been idleing a bit lower than normal, (it will drop to about 300-400rpms) since the oil pump is mechanically driven and the light only comes on when there is no load applied I can only assume that the low idle is causing my pressure drop. I also noticed this weekend that I have a slight leak in my radiator. I am pretty sure itís the cap that went bad so I replaced it. (that did nothing) I have read that a leaking cooling system or bubbles in the cooling system can cause a fluctuation in idleing, which in turn will cause my low oil pressure. Now I took it to the Honda dealership in West Chester and the head mechanic said that it would cost almost $800 to replace the oil pressure switch and hook up a pressure gauge to it and see if it has pressure. The high cost of it is due to the extensive ripping apart the top end of the engine to even get to the switch. So the head mechanic told me if I can live with the light just ignore it. (are you kidding me!?!?!?!) Because the engine does sound quite and there is no oil burning or leaking/loose of power/no spun bearing.ect. ect.

So my question is what do I do now? Should I rip apart the intake and clean the hell out of it to try and correct the low idle problem? Or should I pay the hundreds of dollars to see if I even have pressure. Doing that doesnít make any sense to me cause the owners manual says that when the light comes on that the oil pressure dropped beyond a certain point and then it recovers itself when the light starts blinking. Am I causing further unnecessary damage on the engine? I have read dam near all the post about low idle and I found a few on the oil pressure but I am just not sure what I should do to correct this problem or should I just sell it?

I have a 98 type sh (just to give you an idea)
Only mods are k&n intake and a cat back exhaust.

Re: this is driving me crazy.....

It's not losing oil is it? How does the exhaust look/smell? A leaky head gasket could introduce coolant into the system making white colored exhaust or maybe act as an open vaccum affecting the idle.

Re: this is driving me crazy.....

no its not leaking oil at all. The exhaust smells and looks normal. i just changed the oil and its looks normal. i did double check the old oil when i was finished and i didnt see anything in it (coolant/metal shavings from a possable spun bearing) it was cool. iam stumped!

Re: this is driving me crazy.....

ok its not 800 bucks to get an oil pressure gauge and get it hooked up. Go tell that honda tech that he is a fail. I bought an autometer gauge and an oil capilary.( i think thats how you spell it) for my car. The capilary was 25.00 bucks and the auto meter gauge was 60.00. it took about an hour to install. the capillary goes on before the oil filter. Look it up on the internet it's really easy. Not worth 800 and it has nothing to do with the top end...... now if you are loosing oil pressure thats a different story.

Re: this is driving me crazy.....

ya 800 is outragous! he said that it was damn near all in labor. my friend at work just told me the other day about, exactly (i think) what you are talking about. its an oil pressure gauge that has a sandwich plate that mounts between the engine and the oil filter. i saw a few on line, i just got to pick one and get it. so iam going to change the oil sensor first and then iam goin to get this gauge. i mean what else can i do????

Re: this is driving me crazy.....

Yes it is a sandwich plate. it works great. Im sure your oil pressure is just fine. Just make sure your oil is topped up and its always clean. If your rad is wrecked buy a new one. for about 300 bucks you can grab a mishimoto. Im not to sure how good they are but they are aluminum rads so.....

Re: this is driving me crazy.....

well i took the day off from work and swaped out the old rad with a brand spanking new one. i ordered the stock one from pep boys. its the same one the dealer ship had but they wanted $250 for it and that wasent even goin to cover the labor. i got this one for $99. its not a high flow aluminum but it will it will work.

2 hoses $25
1 gallon of coolant $13
1 rad $99
3 hours putting it in and not giving the dealership one cent.....priceless

Re: this is driving me crazy.....

It says you're getting low oil pressure...do you still have VTEC? If VTEC will engage when that light is on then there's a faulty sensor or something. VTEC requires a certain amount oil pressure to engage (after all, it is an oil pressure switch), and if you're having an oil pressure problem, that's a sure-fire way to find out.

Re: this is driving me crazy.....

ya i still have vtec. I didnt even think that it would affect it. the light only comes on and stays on when there is no load (bleow 1000 rpms)(and warmed up), it starts to blink when the gas is applied. Will a low idle cause a drop in pressure????

Check all your vacuum lines. That's what I would do.

Nooo but low oil pressure could affect your idle. is your car cycling? like revving up and down around idle.??

Saturday when i pulled the iacv appart and cleaned the hell out of it, and its only done it twice so far but it will jump from 1500 to 2000rpms about 4 times and then settles down. i need to take care of the oil pressure, but when iam at work all the best damn part sites are blocked. so i havent found a set up i like yet. i think iam going to get the a piller gauge cluster and not only get the oil pressure but get the volt too. maybe another but cant decide....

Re: this is driving me crazy.....

I would get Oil Pressure and a Wideband A/F . Seriously though...good luck in solving your problem man. It doesn't sound too serious, and it's probably something silly that we're all overlooking.

Re: this is driving me crazy.....

my lude had a similar problem. but mine was leaking oil but only a little bit, but when i would get on the gas the oil light would come on. came to conclusion that the gasket on my oil filter was split and was sprayin out a lil stream of oil when the oil pressure builds. changed the oil and filter and that problem went away. so check all your vacuum lines, and if all else fails, check out your oil filter. just an idea
