Scared shifing from 5th to 4th.

Alright as some may know I have a 1999 Prelude that's a manual. (As opposed to my 88 Prelude that's an automatic).

And I had to learn how to drive a manual. I'm doing good so far. Stalling a lot less. (Though on each of my long cruses at night, there is always ONE time where I can't seem to go after a stoplight, keep stalling for like, 6 times but that's a different story.)

ANYWAY, I've only been to 5th gear a few times. But I am scared when downshifting to 4th. Because I seem to always accidentally put it in second. (scares the crap out of me when I'm going like 40 or so mph and go from 5th to second.)

So how can I become well-versed in shifting from 5th to 4th? Because I don't want to destroy the engine.

Re: Scared shifing from 5th to 4th.

Practice.

Practice shifting from 5th to 4th without letting go of the clutch pedal...once you believe you're in 4th, ease off the clutch and if the RPMS dont fly towards redline, you've done well

Practice in your driveway. There's not much more advice anyone can give you.

Re: Scared shifing from 5th to 4th.

dont pull it toward you when you shift... just strait down and it should fall right into 4th. there is no possible way to go to reverse from 5th so just keep a little pressure goin down and away when you shift

Re: Scared shifing from 5th to 4th.

easiest way is to put it in Neutral, let go of shifter, then pull straight down.

i had the same problem you did when i first learn to drive, and thats how i learned.

Re: Scared shifing from 5th to 4th.

This is what i told and old gf that was doing the same thing you are and it help her a lot. I put the car in 2nd 4th and reverse and marked each with some duck tape on the center console. That way you can line up the shifter with the tape the visual cue helps out a lot and soon you get the feel of it and not need the tape at all.

Re: Scared shifing from 5th to 4th.

I never understood America's obsession with Automatic cars?

Over here, (Ireland) most cars are manual, it's only recently automatics have started becoming more popular.

I think manual is simple to drive.

Like dude above said about letting it go to neutral, you are not ment to direct the gear stick to 4th, its possible to change 5th to 4th with only one finger, small push downwards out of 5th, the stick will pop to the centre right above the 4th gear and a small push downwards into 4th all with the on clutch

good luck

ok.. so these guys are right.. it just takes time.. and i the tip about just dropping it strait back from 5th is what i do..

but about going 40? the way i drive 40 in second is not that big of deal.. i'm pretty sure i've been doing close to 60 before shifting into 3rd.. lol.. my prelude the race car.. don't worry about it so much and you will be fine

Re: Scared shifing from 5th to 4th.

I did the same thing when I first started driving my stick too.

Thankfully Honda (and most other car companies) made it so that it is impossible to go directly into reverse from 5th. So all you have to do is just pull straight back on the shifter and it'll go into 4th, don't put any pressure to the left and you'll be fine.

And as distant said, as long as you're not going over 60 then you'll be okay if you go into second. Redline in second (depending on mods and stuff) is about 60-65 mph.

And a little redline never hurt :firedevil:

Re: Scared shifing from 5th to 4th.

The biggest thing is it takes time!!! I practiced with my car off all the time and I think it was the best thing. I was the queen of stalling out and starting in 3rd instead of 1st. You really just have to be comfortable with shifting in general and then it kinda just becomes second nature. Also I def understand being scared lol, I would baby my car so much....thinking the tranny could drop at any moment if I did the wrong thing...IT WONT! Try not to think about it so much either, because the more you concentrate the more nervous you are going to get. Just relax try it a couple times with the car off and get a feel for it. Over time I promise you, you will get better and things will be come so easy! Also the clutch is your best friend...if you think you are going to stall or something is not right push it back in right away. I can't tell you how many times that saved me from being embarrassed at a stop light! (I know its simple but when your new its hard to get everything down)

Re: Scared shifing from 5th to 4th.

Yeah man, I just had to practice, I practiced with the car off, in class, everywhere. But what I do, like others, is pull straight from 5th backward, it'll scoot around reverse cause it's not possible to go into reverse straight from 5th. But mostly practice, I've been driving for about 9 months and I still make mistakes sometimes.

But I haven't stalled since last October (knocks on wood).

Re: Scared shifing from 5th to 4th.

I'd have to agree with 2.2lude, the easiest way is to put it into neutral and then just pull straight down. Also, try driving without the radio on and get to know the sounds your engine makes in different gears at different speeds. If you hear the engine rev really high then you are probably putting it into the wrong gear and should press the clutch back in and take a look. Good luck and have fun!

Re: Scared shifing from 5th to 4th.

best thing to do is practice while the car is off. Then when you feel comfortable enough, when you have the car on, just press in the clutch pedal and go thru the gears a few times. As long as you don't let the clutch out it'll be fine.

Only thing to make you a better driver is seat time. As long as you drive it you'll continue to learn the car and improve driving.

also get used to using both feet at the same time, as in panic breaking situations. Usually when I go to use the brakes i'm kicking in the clutch to downshift into a lower gear.

Re: Scared shifing from 5th to 4th.

Emmmmm 2rd gear at 50 mph thats Vtec mode for me!!!!!!
(do it all the time because people thinking they have to 45 merginign in to 75-85 mph traffic)

It in your car and imagin your racing, just shift through the gears. You learn from your mistakes thats honda Motto so hell even if you do hit 2nd pratice makes perfect

I wish it was standard that you have to drive a stick for your road test because most people would fail in the us because its just another thing we have to do and we dont know how to do 5 things at once (talk on the cell, push the clutch in, shift, look in your mirror, and turn the steering wheel) lol

Re: Scared shifing from 5th to 4th.

im glad i didn't take my driving test in a manual car they wouldn't have let me go very far. I think if i retook my test now, i'd pass in a manual car without a doubt.

My prelude was my 1st manual car that i ever drove for more than 15 minutes(almost 6 years ago). Its still my DD...

Re: Scared shifing from 5th to 4th.

listen best way is to put fear into you? k..you dont want to damage the engine clutch and all that crap cuz you over reved it to like 25k..but practice makes perfect. so what you do is this.

get someone that can drive stick..go on a very straight closed course ( a 6 miles straight)

let him drive and do 100, then put the car on cruise, now switch seats and throw in 4th..and if you **** up..well better start shopping! a little pressure wont hurt...lol i keed

practice makes perfect, 2.2 has the best solution for you, theres no need to pull it near you, and theres no need to shift in .2 seconds for you, your learning not racing.

when you want to shift put it in neutral and select your gear..(BESIDES 1ST) defintely a no no, if your rolling dont ever put it back in first. unless your going really slow..but theres no need for it..if your slowing up throw it in neutral, if your coming to a light and it turns green and your still moving..throw it in 2nd

who drives in 5th gear at 40mph?? thats just boring!!.. i usually do 2nd or 3rd at that speed and theres no harm in shifting from 5th to 2nd at that speed, its actually quite fun!!

being in 5th gear at 40mph is more economical. maybe he's just cruising down some expressway or something.

like others have said, just pull down out of 5th, let it fall into neutral and keep pulling down into 4th. practice makes perfect

Oh the memories.... wait... I was driving stick when I was like 12-- LOL -- a LOOOOONG time ago... yes, I drove the potato truck in the fields--

try driving a 10 or 15 speed...
10 is actually the worst... you go through the first 5 (low) gears like normal, then you switch into high gear and go back to "1st" - which is actually 6th... hehehe.

Good times!

So is an 18 speed.... (and believe me it sucks driving one [and no I dont have my CDL ])

The way I learned (it was stated above) was I moved out of 5th in put it in neutral and let it come to a rest between 3rd and 4th. Then I just pushed it straight down. So you just push the clutch down, put the shifter into the neutral position. Let go of it and let it find the center for you, then just push straight down into 4th, then let go of the clutch. Practice makes perfect bro. Good luck. You'll get it eventually.
