prelude hesitation issue..need help

I have a 5th gen prelude(stock except for short ram intake) with 191,000 on it and lfor the past 6 months or so I have been getting really bad hesitation mainly on the low end, vtec seems to be working fine. It is most noticeable when it is hot or humid outside but it has happened to me even when the temperature is cold as well.

It is very hard for me to be precise as to when this power loss happens, during the day mostly, on cold nights it seems to run perfectly fine. On occasion during the day if i drive it hard and floor it in vtec it will not hesitate in the lower RPM's for a little while... then start up again almost like random power fluctuation.

Basically when i go for a drive during the day it seems to give me different amounts of power at different times(not a great range of power difference is felt but enough so that it is noticeable) is how I can best explain it.

So to be clear my problem is not 100% of the time.

I have already spent atleast 4-6 hours researching this issue(which seems to be not-so-uncommon ) and am stuck.

I have already tryed new plugs, wires, and pcv valve..no luck so far.

I am going to try replacing the fuel filter next.... any help is much appreciated.

Re: prelude hesitation issue..need help

the issue seems pretty vague but first thing that pops into mind w/ the diff temps is that you may be using the wrong engine oil

are u using a 5w-30?

Re: prelude hesitation issue..need help

yea def check the engine oil, but if you have that many miles and the problems persist beyond it being worth fixing, its either time to put a new h22 in whether it be a JDM one or one from a junkyard, itll prob be the good thing all around. good luck

Re: prelude hesitation issue..need help

yes lol the right type of oil is used I do changes every 4000km's also.

definitly not going to throw a new h22 in...191,000 still should run fine. I have a friend who has a lude with 230,000 and it runs much more solid then mine.

This problem has popped up on a bunch of different forums yet there seems to be no solid solution.

Re: prelude hesitation issue..need help

always 91 onctane
5w-30 as the manual suggests
havent done a compression test as i figured if it runs well sometimes but not others so wouldnt that make the test pointless...

Re: prelude hesitation issue..need help

havent looked into those, so i guess those parts listed above can be affected by temperature.

Re: prelude hesitation issue..need help

not too sure if this will help cuz it seems that your problem is temp related....but i know in my buddies 98 prelude he had a slight hesitation in his car and we gave it the full tune up (plugs cap rotor oil change ect.) and we also adjusted the valves and that seemed to help alot. maybe just a lil valve adjustment could change it all? hope it helps

Re: prelude hesitation issue..need help

I got that too. The way i got rid of it was i did a header-back exhaust system. Now theres no hisitation when flooring it in low RPMs. Also clean out ur intake mani and throw sum seafoam in your oil, and gas tank.
