Is it Common?

~I just bought a 97, it belonged to my cousin and he had not driven it for almost a year. I changed all the fluids. It jerks when it shifts to 2nd Gear. So i called a buddy of mine that works for Honda and he said to change the tranny fluid. I used Honda fluid the 2nd and the 3rd time which was today.

The car still 0jerks on 2nd gear when its cold. When it's warmed up it shifts fine.

Suggestions????

Re: Is it Common?

^^^ Agreed.

The auto trannys are one of the only things that Honda has ever designed poorly. They are prone to failing by literally burning up their internals. Transmission fluid ends up superheating and destroying everything else in there. The reason why it's alright after it warms up is because the viscocity of the fluid becomes thinner and less resistant. But it sounds like your tranny is on the way out.

Re: Is it Common?

Tear it down or have it torn down,
Honda auto trannies are known to suck anyway, but especially 5th gen Prelude autos. The 97-98's were the worst.

Re: Is it Common?

Depends on how good a deal you find on the parts, and if you do it yourself.

If you just walk into a legit tranny shop: $4,000
Find parts yourself and have someone swap it: around $2,000
Do it yourself and find all the parts yourself: $around $1,000
