click, but no start

Couple hours I went to a friends house. I parked went in. 10 minutes later I goto leave and the car won't turn over at all.

there's the distinct strong click from the starter, but nothing. Lights are bright as can be and the redtop is about 6 months old.

Any suggestions? I'm pretty much stuck here now. Ha.

Re: click, but no start

It's more than likely gonna be electrical. That happened to me a few months ago, put in a new battery and started right up. But thinking back on it, I kinda think I had a bad ground connection on the negative side of the battery. So check the battery and make sure your getting proper voltage.

Re: click, but no start

check the battery and or altenator. if you have a click, it's not the starter

Also if you have an aftermarket alarm, could cause something.

Re: click, but no start

if u have an alarm it could be the starter kill.

But it sounds more like an electrical issue. Make sure both ur cables are secured to the battery. Have you tried jump starting it?

Re: click, but no start

you think it's the starter? In a matter of 10 minutes it went to ****. Makes sense though. Everything is bright as can be and alarm's horn didn't lose a decibel.

It was strange too driving home from gibbsboro. My radio would do anything. I couldn't turn it up, down, off or change anything on it. Now it won't play.

Re: click, but no start

Well, that's weird your having more than one problem. If your radio won't turn on that sounds like voltage issue, dead battery. Your lights are usually the biggest tell tale. If your voltage is low enough to not turn on your radio your lights would be very dim. To me it sounded like the starter. And still kinda does. It takes far less current to engage the solenoid than it does to turn the motor and if you have a bad motor or a brush is stuck to the comm then you won't crank but will hear the solenoid (click). Try and grab a volt meter and check the batterys voltage. Check it from the posts first then from the clamps. It should be the same but if you have bad connections you will have less voltage on the clamps.

Re: click, but no start

exact symptoms of a loose battery terminal or faulty ground. Your battery will test good, lights will work, it jump starts fine....but wont start on it's own. Check for a loose, broken, or corroded terminals.

As far as the radio, hopefully just a reaction of low voltage. I'd get the car up and running first before worrying about the tunes.

Re: click, but no start

Ok so I pushed started my car and got it in front of my house at least so narrowing down to starter, but while driving. All the lights in my car blinked twice the pause, twice, pause etc.

I mean everything went in time with this blink. Clock, the lights on the cruise control and foglight switches, side markers, rear blinkers and if the fog lights were. they blinked too.

So I'm pretty sure this is pure eletrical. Anyone know what this is?

seems like a bad earth / battery connection, also have you tried tapping the starter solenoid with a mallet or something to check whether it could be ur starter??

sure have. I've completely disconnected the battery and cleans the terminal clamps and post also. Like I said. Everything shines bright and if it is my battery I gotta find my optima warrenty. because it's been less then a year.

These blinking lights are really throwing me off. I have never seen anything like this before.

Re: click, but no start

Ok I'm pretty sure it's my starter.

I found that if I turn the key 4-5 times it will turn over no problem, but could it also be a bad ignition switch or isolated with the starter?

I know before this problem, my lights dimmed when I started my car. So at that time my ignition switch was good correct?

Re: click, but no start

i guess its gonna be a trial an error episode..or you could take it to a shop, pay them a little bit and have the problem investigated and they can pinpoint it for you.

Re: click, but no start

So take half the coin you would pay a shop to investigate and buy a nice digital, autoranging mulitmeter. (Craftsman 40 bucks works great) test your start wire at the starter. If you get 12v on start it isn't your ignition switch. My buddy whoi worked at a dealership for a number of years said it isn't uncommon for the switches to go bad.

Re: click, but no start

invest in a multimeter. It could save you money when u learn to use it on issues like this.

But it seems like you have it figured out...on the starting side. Just hope that "turn key 4 or 5 times" trick works everytime for ya

I used to have the same starting problem with my old maxima, and it turned out to be the starter...but it could be a different cause with the same symtoms.

I was just waiting for someone with the same symptoms as me, ha. Too many moving parts in these engines.

Thanks fellas. You guys are awesome. Saved me trouble of payin someone else to tell me what was wrong.
