Idle Turned to CEL

So the other day I drove half a mile to a smoke shop. Casually and not gunning it. I get back to my house and I get that infamous 1000-1500 idle jump. As soon as I got back to my house I did this Cleaned The IAV. I used STP Carb cleaner. Put it back on started the engine up, let it idle for about 2 minutes. Then started to rev it to 3k RPM as to clean out the system. The engine bogged for a little bit and then went back to normal. I drove it around the block and the notorious idle flux was still there. I went back on the forums and saw someone say it's ok to drive the car like this, it wont mess anything up. So I went to work (30-45 mins away). Came back home, the idle was still fluxing, left my car running for about 1 minute. Then the fluxing stopped and the CEL came on. I then tried to drive the car, and my RPM's wont go pass 1000. So I cant go pass 3mph.

However I didn't frown upon this, I took this as a godsent, cause now that the CEL is on, I can figure out what's wrong with my baby. I quickly hopped in my friend's car and went to AutoZone so I could borrow the OBDII Scanner. COME TO FIND OUT, in California they shut all of that down. Kragen nor AutoZone no longer lends out OBDII scanners. So I'm about to go buy one from say Wal-Mart and return it later.

I'll keep you guys posted on what the CEL turned out to be.
Until then, has any of this happened to you guys??

PS. Sorry it was so long, thanks for reading

Re: Idle Turned to CEL

FITV is by far the more common cause for the 'rev rev' idle problems. Block it off or replace it. Hopefully, thats all it is. The CEL may not be related at all, but let us know what ya get and how it turns out.

Re: Idle Turned to CEL

So it's update time. I guess the day after I got the CEL, I started up the car and....
No more idle problems? Could this be because, when I cleaned the IAC, the system needed to reset itself? I'm thinking that's what happened, cause I've driven to and from work twice and my job is in Chino, I'm in Corona. For all you So-Cali's out there =P.

Anyway, everythings fine. Thread closed?

Re: Idle Turned to CEL

good stuff.

OBD II codes are usually stored even if the CEL doesn't come on. I would go get your car scanned to make sure.

Re: Idle Turned to CEL

Yeah I already did.
Called the dealer and told them to reset it for me.
That's right, I told them ;)
They said come on in.
CEL hasn't shown it's ugly head since Bush was still president.
=)

Re: Idle Turned to CEL

To reset the CEL you can always just pull the ECU fuse or disconnect the battery for a couple minutes. You can also manually check the code by crossing the 2 wires in the small gray plug beneath the glove box. I believe the wires are solid blue and blue/yellow and there is a random piece of blue tape wrapped around it. When you cross them w/ the key in the ignition it will make the CEL flash in a certain sequence to let you know what the code is. This was how OBD1 codes are read but many OBDII cars kept this older way as a backup.
