Icon9 Radio Issue

Ok so I will do my best to make this as short as possible.

I hooked a power inverter into my cigarette lighter of my 01 Prelude. After doing so, I turned the ignition to on, and the inverter made a loud beeping noise and started smoking. I cut the car off as soon as I noticed this, but in the process my radio cut off. I unplugged the inverter and figured I just blew a fuse to the radio. When I got off of work, I got into my car, started it up, and the radio cut on shortly after (maybe about 5 seconds longer than it normally would have). I thought "Well isn't that peculiar", so I then plugged in my GPS charger just to see what it did (BTW my GPS was not hooked up on the mount). Radio cuts off. When I unplugged it, radio cut on. I then tried to turn on my dome light on the way home, and again, radio cut off. Turned the light off, and (you probably guessed it by now) radio cut back on. *Note: the dome lights do not work at all now, so the fuse to them probably blew, and I do not want to risk plugging anything of value into the power outlet.* So I'm not electrician by any means, but I'm thinking there is some sort of allowed voltage in total by these accessories. When turning on more than one of any three, they all cut off. Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions, as I am very upset by this and would like to fix it as soon as possible.

Re: Radio Issue

sounds like you should replace the fuzes under the hood for the radio. check your resource guide to find out which fuzes are for what.

Re: Radio Issue

too me it sounds like your radio is being shorted to the ground. every time power is divided between the circuits, it grounds the radio to the ground. there is a relay between fuse #18 and ground, that relay could have gone bad, or your ground could have gone bad. i posted a pic for you to see (sorry about the ****ty picture)

Re: Radio Issue

Well you definately have a weird problem because the dome light is on a constant power fuse. And the cigarette lighter is on an ignition power circuit. Check both fuses and make sure they are the correct amperage.

Is the radio aftermarket or factory?

When it turns off and back on do you still have your presets and such or does it reset everything?

Do you have a multimeter? (Digital or analog)

Let me know the answers and we can probably track it down.

Re: Radio Issue

Radio is factory.

It keeps all the presets (when it cuts off the security light flashes like the car was turned off until it cuts back on).

I do have a multimeter, but i'll have to track it down.

For the record, the radio will only work when the dome light switch is set to cut on when the door. If I switch it on or off...the radio doesn't work. The fuse to the dome light is blown btw.

Re: Radio Issue

Welllll.... I would start with pulling the radio out and inspecting the wires going to your cigarette lighter. They could be burned. If you power inverter had a short and your fuse was faulty or there was a larger one in it you could have caused too much amperage to burn the insulation off the wires and you are in turn feeding power or ground into something that shouldn't. With your dome switch in door position, your radio comes on correct? Is that with the door open, closed or both?

Re: Radio Issue

The radio will only come on when the dome light is switched to door, and when the door is shut.

Re: Radio Issue

Holy buckets! Wow... Uh...if your door was open it COULD make sense because you could be feeding the ground through to door switch but that cicuit is only closed with the door open. And if it dropped ground you would probably lose presets. And if the security light was on then you have ground. I guess famke sure fuses are good and proper and no wires are cooked and well go from there.

Re: Radio Issue

possibly could your alternator be shot because if you dont have enough power something will shut off but its probably not that i would try all the fuses first because it happened when something started to smoke haha so try fuses for sure check em all seeing as how it is happening with a bunch of things

Re: Radio Issue

Sorry it took me so long to post back to you guys...

Basically checked all fuses under the hood, and the interior light fuse went out. Swapped it for another 10 amp fuse and voila...back to normal. Crazy how 1 fuse can make so many things go haywire. Anyways...thanks for all the help guys.
