Icon2 Opinions please!!

Ok guys. Im kinda stuck. I have a 98 lude and love it to death. Its my daily driver and sadly its an automatic. But dont worry, im definitely planning on doing the 5spd swap! I promise. But ok. The problem is that im looking to gain more hp. I've looked into turbos but i wanna keep my car very reliable because im still in college. And plus it seems like a ton of money 2 deal out! Ive looked into internals but another problem. Im not very mechanically inclined. And i dont just have another h22 laying around. So my question is, what would be your opinion on what i could do? Please help me. lol. And one of my friends said that if i wanted 2 get type s pistons and have a shop put them in, i would have to tear apart the block for them. Is that true too? Sorry for the long thread but i would appreciate any opinions more than you know. Thanks and HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!

Re: Opinions please!!

well man if you want cheap performance there's always the ol' I/H/E, intake, header, exhaust. then there's small things like pullies, spark plug wires, cam gears etc that will help get you a good N/A tune. Putting a turbie on the lude with a college budget is probably gonna be difficult, so go with the cheap stuff that makes it sound good

Re: Opinions please!!

depends on what brands you want. you can get good horsepower+good brands..but =a lot of money. you can get decent stuff for the right price, but depends how much your budget is, if you and some buddies learn to do stuff so you won't have to pay a shop, or you should find people that can hook you up and charge you cheaper then shops. for example im currently doing a 5spd swap. i ripped another car apart to do it. all it is ,is labor. me and my cousin never did this but you learn and follow advice from people and also a few bucks too. rather then having a shop do it for me and charge me a good amount.

don't listen to me cuz I just had fever for the past 2 days, but I say a Nitrous set up. 30 shot won't kill your engine.

Re: Opinions please!!

Ill agree with Serge here. A small shot of nitrous won't hurt anything when used moderately. Its probably the best bang-for-buck mod you can do on a college student budget.

P.S. DJ, nice quote in your sig haha.

Re: Opinions please!!

the only thing i think i can add is maybe getting some fiberglass parts like hood, front fenders, and trunk lid. that could save you a little weight. i dont know if that would be to high for college price rang but it should be a idea? because hp is nothing when your car is a big paper weight.

Re: Opinions please!!

If you really are serious about dropping some weight, I would recommend gutting the interior...do away with the backseat, all the insulation, spare tire, jack, any other assorted BS thats in your car. And if you're REALLY serious, like Blake (98VTEC), throw away your power steering and AC stuff.

Blake is the bang for the buck guy....no homo.

Re: Opinions please!!

you could get some stage 1 cams, I/H/E, pullies, and a good tune. this setup would give you more power. what are you looking for as far as power gains?

Re: Opinions please!!

cams and a tune would run him a bit too much for a school budget. In order to do cams, u have to do valves/retainers as well.

NITROUS IS THE ANSWER!!! in your case 30 shot and no more.

I have high mileage on the car, otherwise I would already be running a 50 shot of NX.

Disclaimer: Serge is not responsible for any damages caused to you or your lude while abusing the crap out of nitrous. He is just making a friendly suggestion. Don't forget he had fever for the past 2 days, and might be saying nonsense.

Re: Opinions please!!

I mean, a little shot of Nitrous may give an effective power gain, I would definitely be careful with it...if you go nuts with it, you're gonna blow the chit up and be out of a motor in a heartbeat.

Re: Opinions please!!

Ok. thanks everybody for your opinions. I've thought about the nitrous before and i definitely wouldnt abuse it. So I mite go that route. Seems like a good option. But as far as what power im looking for, i just wanna try and get over 200whp. Hopefully i can do that without having 2 do internals or anything...i really dont know. Oh, also, could anybody answer my question about if i got type s pistons and had a shop do it, would i have 2 tear the block apart? Oh, one last thing. I've tried taking out my back seats...theres no room back there anyways. Lol, but i cant find out how 2 take them out. Please help...

Re: Opinions please!!

30 shot of nitrous on an H22 should put you right over your 200hp+ mark. Since they push out ~195hp stock.

A head build is way out of budget compared to a nitrous set-up. A head build done properly is going to run ~$2500+ easily.

Re: Opinions please!!

Well if you are set on your 5 spd swap then I would strive for that, because it is going to cost you alot of money, personally I would sell your auto and buy a 5 spd. Now you want to go turbo (or forced induction) I would get the 5spd thing taken care of first before you go dumping money into going turbo I was going that route and decided that it was way too much money for something that probably wouldn't last very long. But its your car and you know what you like and if thats what you want then go for it.

Re: Opinions please!!

Well theres a problem about selling the lude and gettin a 5spd. i would definitely do that if i could. But I just got the car like 2 or 3 months ago. So im actually still paying for ti. It sucks having a car note. I make about 350 a week so i mean i could still spend money, I just gotta save it up if i want somethin that big. But from what im hearing, it would be best 2 get like a 30 or 40 shot of nitrous, cams, and some pulleys? that will put me over 200whp? And does nobody have any info on the whole type s piston thing and taking out the backseats? lol. But i appreciate everybodys help so far. thanks guys

Re: Opinions please!!

In order to get the Type S pistons installed, the head has to get pulled, the oil pan taken off, crank casing as well. Then you have to replace the rod bearings along with the main bearings(since you already there). And 1 smart man on here told me that you would have to send out your crank, rods, main/rod bearings for balancing to a machine shop (to get the job done right). So once again it will cost you.

Stage 1 cams will run you about $350-$500 plus installation.

When you take your motor apart like that, you might as well change a lot of things. So later on you wouldn't have to disassemble the motor.

Once your head is off - you can get it ported and polished and depending on the mileage on the motor you can still get a valve job. Then put the cams on, head gasket, timing belt, new head studs

Bottom end - Type S pistons, crank balancing, new bearings, water pump.

I just don't see a point of disassembling the engine and doing only 1 single thing. But that's just me.

Re: Opinions please!!

+1 serge is right. Just use a 30-40 shot of nitrous. It'll put you over your 200hp goal and be your cheapest route. Just use moderation.
