Temperature Gauge Jumped... Help?!

As I was driving over to work 15 minutes ago, I pulled out onto the highway, and almost instantly, my temperature gauge jumped from all the way on C to all the way on H. Anyone know what could have happened? I'm guessing a belt or something to do with the water pump. Please chime in only with USEFUL information.

Re: Temperature Gauge Jumped... Help?!

Ah yeah it could be your water pump and that belt your talking about is your timing belt, bad news mate. Especially if you kept on driving it.

This means your belt broke and now your cams are not on TDC and your exhaust valves are stuck open which means your pistons have probably already bent a couple of your exhaust valves. Not good are you still driving it? If its not sputtering and running like crap then its probably not your water pump or timing belt

Now it could be other things like a stuck thermostat.

Clogged radiator
have you tried doing a cheap fix on the radiator lately like pouring stop leak in the radiator?

Re: Temperature Gauge Jumped... Help?!

Nope, nothing out of the ordinary as far as matinance is concerned.

Heres the real sketchy thing though, the car is driving completely fine, even when the gauge jumped, there was no difference in performance or anything.

I'm wondering if the gauge is just screwy.

Re: Temperature Gauge Jumped... Help?!

It's possible

I'll have to re-check the wiring on some of my led conversions. I just want to make sure that I'm not hurting anything.

Re: Temperature Gauge Jumped... Help?!

Well if your not smoking and steam and coolant aren't spuing all other the place I think your safe but it is still risking not knowing the true temp, did you uninstall the factory temp gauge? or unhook it? I'd try and get that back to working for the time being until you have time to check your wiring.

Re: Temperature Gauge Jumped... Help?!

I think I will try unhooking the battery and reseting the ECU and see if that clears it. Hopefully, when I get off work it will be back to normal, but I doubt it.

Re: Temperature Gauge Jumped... Help?!

You know the condition my CAT is in I'm surprised that I am not getting any codes. I know that thing is coming to pieces as you can rap on the side of it and hear stuff rattling around inside it.

Well if you notice chunks of paint coming off your valvecover then you know your in trouble. Usually tell, tale sign an engine got hot if the valve cover has paint missing all over it.

Re: Temperature Gauge Jumped... Help?!

I just got off work about an hour ago, stopped in at Autozone and had them give me their opinion. They said that it sounded like an air bubble in the coolant stream which caused the sensor to temporarily flare. Sure enough, its back to normal. Thanks for your advice everyone!

That is weird, an air bubble?

you have no leaks and your radiator is full to the brim?

replace your thermostat, it's like 20 bucks not even and every single person forgets that this is also a good item to maintain...

Re: Temperature Gauge Jumped... Help?!

Even though the problem is fixed for now, you may want to inspect your radiator and coolant system along with the coolant temp sensor. Make sure the reservoir is connected properly and all that jazz. Also, I'd recommend doing a radiator flush just to see if anything looks abnormal in the fluid.

If the temp sensor is bad it could cause a CEL but it would depend on how the ECU reads the problem.

Sounds like one of those things that fixed itself. If the problem starts over again it may be easier to troubleshoot when other problems come with it. I know that may not sound like the best plan but its hard to troublshoot smaller problems.

Re: Temperature Gauge Jumped... Help?!

^^^ I completely agree, I actually had just called my mechanic and I'm having him flush my radiator and take a quick look at my cooling system while I'm at work tomorrow. (His shop is right down the street )

He's doing it for free, considering how many cars I've brought him.

I'm working 9-5 for the next few days and I'd rather let him do it.

Thanks for your concern Yogi, lol.

Re: Temperature Gauge Jumped... Help?!

Sounds like you had a loose connection or sensor is on the fritz tbh, since when you disconnect the temp gauge sensor it pegs the needle right away. At least mine does.
