Icon5 Thinking of purchasing a 97 SH tomorrow, have a few questions!

Hey folks!

So a little history on myself. I am Shawn, and from sunny south Florida. I purchased a 94 Acura Integra RS 4-speed for my first car 2 years ago. I absolutely love the car and have autocrossed it a few times along with a few laps around our local track. I have now gotten to the point where if I want more power, I will need to do a tranny and engine swap to be satisfied. I decided it will be easier to just purchase a new vehicle.

So the search began. I love Honda's, and I am part of a racing team with SCCA racing a civic SI, so I naturally choose from there. I liked the design of the 5th gen Preludes and have been waiting for one to come up. I was looking for a minimal modded and abused SH (yes I know it would be hard) with a clean record. I found one local to me and went to look at it today.

It is a true SH, with the AACT or whatever light flashing on the dashboard, and the lights on the door panels. It has close to 90,000 miles and the interior is in almost perfect shape. Unfortionetly the battery was dead so I could not drive it today, but tomorrow they will have a new batter installed for me so I can take it around the block.

Now for the flaws. Overall without driving it, I have very few nitpicks for the car besides the need for some detailing. Here are my little quirks.

1) It appears the hood is slightly fading which is a common problem with reds. Is there a alternative to fix this besides repainting the whole car? If it needs a repaint of the whole car, has anyone been quoted on a price for a decent paint job? I would not want to paint it a new color, just the same red.

2) The driver side's door handle is loose when pulled on. It is securely fixed to the car, but has a little too much "play" for my taste. Is this a simple bolt or spring to replace?

3) The clip holding the hood cable that holds the hood up is broken. Is there a place I could purchase such a small item?

4) I would like to have fog lights, how much are the OEM fogs for a 97? How hard of a installation are these when they did not come from the factory?

5) The shifter is a little too spongy for my personal taste. Would a short shifter and new bushings simply solve this?

The company is asking 6900 for the car which I called them out on. What should I offer on the car?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! And for a little fun, here is a few pictures of my current teg'.

Re: Thinking of purchasing a 97 SH tomorrow, have a few questions!

Start off... how many miles are on it?

if its just really the hood that needs it, then you can just get the hood painted, buy a new hood, or paint the whole car depending on how bad the paint is on the rest of the car.

the door handle has a spring inside, although I've never messed with it, I hear its not incredibly hard, but far from fun. Check the helms manual, or look in the 5th gen resource guide and download the manual
5th Gen Resource Guide

the clip that holds the hood prop can probably be bought at a local dealership, or from any OEM honda parts manufactorer. Majestic honda has a lot of shiit from what I hear. No personal experience here tho ... sorry bro.

I'm not sure on the cost of OEM fogs, but the installation isnt that hard. I'm sure there is a write up somewhere for it. Running the wires would be the hardest part, and if you cant figure it out i'm sure someone on here wouldnt mind helping you out.

from what I hear there isn't a short shifter available for 5th gens yet. Its due out sometime soon, but I can promise you that its better than that 4speed craptastic auto in your teggy.

btw that teggy is sexy as hell bro. whats the mileage on the lude? what kind of condition is the motor in? any leaks? look at the dipstick... if you see brown stains on it after you wipe it off, it usually means the oil wasnt changed every 3000 miles. be watchful for stuff like that. listen to the motor. if you hear any funny/unusual sounds keep them in mind before purchase. valve lash is always a big thing with honda. honda heads tick alot so dont let that alert you if its not that loud.

and its called ATTS

Get back to us. And good luck with the purchase.

Re: Thinking of purchasing a 97 SH tomorrow, have a few questions!

It has close to 90,000 miles.

The car was pretty dirty from sitting on the lot for the past few weeks so I told them to detail the car before I get there tomorrow. I can assess the actual paint condition tomorrow.

There is not a short shifter available yet for the 5th gen's? That is surprising to hear, especially such a tuner directed car! But as you said, that thing could be a old VW bus shifter for all I care, as long as it's not the slushbox I am driving now!

I will keep you posted how it goes tomorrow. With any luck, I will be joining the crew soon enough. Thanks for the input! Anyone else have any opinions?

Oh and thanks for the compliment on the teg! I bought it when it had 118,000 on the clock and have been kind of restoring it for the past year or so. Did not really dump money into it, just a lot of elbow grease!

Re: Thinking of purchasing a 97 SH tomorrow, have a few questions!

Another thing to watch for is when you drive it, check the rearview when you get on the gas (and by get on the gas I mean floor it). If its burning a lot of oil at every stoplight and stuff I'd be very careful with that. Still decently low mileage so thats a plus.

and I for some reason always loved teggies and civic hatchbacks. and white just happens to be my favorite color

Re: Thinking of purchasing a 97 SH tomorrow, have a few questions!

Yea. Overall I have grown up a bit and I just want a little heavier, high powered coupe. The Integra is a blast to drive even with a auto and I think I have spent $300 in basic maintenance for the past 2 years. I could not give a higher praise to that car for what it is. The prelude just is refined a bit more, and is newer. I figure with a promotion at work I should treat myself a little and get what I really want .

What I will miss is that hatchback. I have fit the following in this damm car.

A mattress, full exhaust system, a Christmas tree, myself (sleeping in that car is actually pretty conferrable if you have a pillow!), 4 full adults and luggage, and racing gear which include a air pressure tank and a full set of tires/toolbox!

LoL D. Greedy bastard.

I was quoted about $300-400 for getting my hood re-painted the factory color. Or for $100-200 more, you can get a CF hood which will help a bit since you auto-X and actually drive your cars. CF hoods on Red 5G's look damn good.

HondaAutomotiveParts.com has every OEM part for Preludes I believe.

I think they go for ~$450 new for everything, not sure. As for installation, not sure, never done it.

Short Shifter + new bushings would solve this indeed.

Good luck dood!

Re: Thinking of purchasing a 97 SH tomorrow, have a few questions!

installation of an OEM foglight kit is very simple.
you dont need to worry about running any wires as the harneses are already in the car. Its all a bunch of plugs. I ordered mine from honda and it took roughly 25-30min... taking my time to make sure everything was exactly right.

everybody else covered the other things

Re: Thinking of purchasing a 97 SH tomorrow, have a few questions!

Thanks for all the replies guys! Really helped me out here.

So I went back and drove her today. First impression was that it is a much more "solid" feeling car when compared to my small, light Integra. After a few times accelerating from a stop I noticed one of the two flaws that I found on the car driving it.

1) There seems to be a bit of clutch "chatter". My father believes it is a pressure plate. Will this affect anything until I replace the clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate? I would rather replace everything at once while I drop the tranny.

2) There is a slight "whining" noise from the engine. I know the typical Honda "ticking" is normal, but should I be worried about this slight whine from the engine when gas is applied? It does not do it at a idle.

Overall I loved the car. An intake and some freeing up of the exhaust would do wonders, but I was completely satisfied by the performance and feel of the car in general.

Now here is the main problem. After the drive I pointed out all the flaws of the car and said to the owner that he was highballing the price when compared to the KBB of the car. He wanted 6,900 for it, but I bargained him down to 6,500. I still believe this is high when I have to blow at least 1,000 for a paint job soon enough, and the car is not perfect.

What do you guys think about the price? I can afford it after I did the number crunching today, but it is more than I was expecting. I walked when he refused to negotiate lower than 6,500, but I found out he has been trying to sell this car on his lot for almost a month now. I feel like he wants to get rid of it. I am in no immediate rush since I have a reliable car sitting with me paid of right now.

And one last thing as a side note, there is a lot of confusion among the resale value of a 94 Acura Integra. KBB says for my area an "excellent" teg is worth only $2,400 yet on Autotrader and other websites, my car with the same options, tranny, and miles are listed for around $4,000. Does anyone think I could get around that figure for my Integra with 128,000 miles, or do you think people are just highballing?

Should be fine after you replace/upgrade your driveline components.

Go back, look under the hood, and see if there is a Supercharger up against the firewall. Lawl. In all seriousness though, are you sure it wasn't alternator whine coming through the speakers?

If you can afford it, and you really want the car, I would try to haggle some more, and if he won't budge from $6500, I'd still do it, but that's me and I'm stupid. I paid $6k for a 96 Prelude VTEC, but it was in immaculate condition, inside and out, as well as mechanically. Basically, if you think it's worth it, buy it.

re paint it if your going back the same color, just try and buff and wax the rest of the car to try and match the fresh paint. As long as it still has clear on it, you should be able to bring it back

2) The driver side's door handle is loose when pulled on. It is securely fixed to the car, but has a little too much "play" for my taste. Is this a simple bolt or spring to replace?

Yes its a spring my passenger side door handle is the same, I believe there is a DIY on here somewhere about the fix

3) The clip holding the hood cable that holds the hood up is broken. Is there a place I could purchase such a small item?

You mean the plastic clamp that holds the hood prop down when not being used? Yes the dealer part is like $6 or something like that

4) I would like to have fog lights, how much are the OEM fogs for a 97? How hard of a installation are these when they did not come from the factory?

Check this site
http://www.handaaccessories.com/preext.html
Scroll down until you see the fog lights price is there also click on installation instructions button

5) The shifter is a little too spongy for my personal taste. Would a short shifter and new bushings simply solve this?

You just might like your GS shifting better saying a short shifter will help I don't know, mostly I have only seen adapters but there is a true shifter out now for our ludes do a search I am sure there is a write up on it somewhere on here

The company is asking 6900 for the car which I called them out on. What should I offer on the car?

That is actually a good price for a 97 SH w/ 90,000 I paid $5000 for my base model last year w/ 142,000 miles

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! And for a little fun, here is a few pictures of my current teg'.

I'd rather see the Lude no offense

Well if your going to sell at KBB price, thats usually what I go by plus a carfax report. When I buy, I have a son that wants a Integra and I see yours is an auto even better as an auto would be great for his first car, but he is only 11 now but 16 is right around the corner. Where you from I might take a look at it.

Re: Thinking of purchasing a 97 SH tomorrow, have a few questions!

Hey guys, sorry for the slow reply. Have been up to my neck in work lately.

I did not end up buying the lude for a few reasons. The price at which it was being sold would have been a push for me, and my sensible side told me to wait since I have college in a few short months. I would have had to drop the tranny and change a pressure plate, and the dealer lied to me on a few occasions on the car which made me skeptical. Good things come to those who are patient, so I will keep my eye open until I find the right one for me.

Thanks for everyone’s help! I will keep all of this in mind the next time a lude comes around in South Florida!

At this point I am looking more towards the 4th gen just for a price advantage. I am also keeping a GSR Integra in mind. All in all, just have an open mind set for the next car and I will just have to see what pops up.

And Rob, I am located in West Palm Beach in southern Florida. As of now, I am holding onto the Teg, but as soon as something pops up that will change.
