engine knock

my engine sometimes makes a knocking sound while idling. i've found that it only makes the noise when i turn it on and let it warm up in the morning before i drive it (which takes about 10-15 mintues). when its making the noise it seems to struggle a bit. almost like its choking. it sounds a lot like this (this isn't my car btw)
'97 Honda Prelude Rod Bearing Knock

it seems to me that if this was the problem with mine, wouldn't it do it ALL the time?
any help would be great, thanks

Re: engine knock

rod knock is very common only at cold idle because thats when the oil's viscosity is the thickest, creating even more frictional and shearing stresses between the journals and bearings, but once the oil warms up and thins out there's not so much stress on the bearings.

Re: engine knock

ok so down here in Houston, we just got a cold front and its doing it all the time now. like even when the engine is at normal operation temperature and stopped at a stop light it will always knock. do you think it could still be the same thing? i'm getting scared to drive it

Re: engine knock

I dough the cold front has to do with it doing it all the time now. One the car warms up the cold weather wont cool the oil to the point it would make it knock.well it could in very low temps. but not in 40's like you are now. might be a oil pump seem a like what was wrong with my 94 saab i had. It just did it when it was cold but then did it all the time.

Re: engine knock

i checked it this morning and there was plenty of it. it looks like it could use a change though. i was gonna do it today, but it seems a bit too cold. but if changing it would possibly make this noise go away, i will go ahead and do it

Re: engine knock

Quicherbitchin' lol. I hate the cold because it always seems to bring out the "hidden" problems in your car. If it's doing it all the time now I'd check it out.

Re: engine knock

Word. Even the greatest minds (like myself) overlook the simplest problems sometimes. I didn't have VTEC for 8 months because of an unplugged wire lol. Ish happens, glad you fixed the problem.
