need some advice on mods for my car! :]

First off let me introduce myself, this is my first post on this website and so far this seems like a cool board to be a member of so here i am! Name's Danny, college kid, and i've been a prelude owner for about 7 months now. I purchased the car out of impulse/necessity without really looking too deeply into the problems it had. My fault i know, but i had always loved the prelude and still do!

Well then onto the reason for this post! My prelude is an automatic, and when i drove it i stayed in vtec, using the triptronic alot! Like alot of auto prelude owners, my tranny started to give and went from a bad situation to a worse situation fast. To sum it up i had to put a junkyard tranny in for lack of money to rebuild, and needless to say the performance has gone waayy down.

Anyways now that i have a nice paying job, i've decided to do a tranny swap in the next two months, but am curious as to how much the job should cost me. I know prices vary but im sure there has to be range that the price should definitely not surpass! Question is, what is that range?

Onto the other questions (srry for the long post!).

My cai broke and i'm looking to get a new one, i've done my research and was dead set on buying an AEM CAI. I live in florida so flooding is pretty common during midyear but i was looking to overcome this by putting a bypass valve on the intake.....that is until i read a post on this forum that said that the bypass valve renders the CAI useless because it completely disrupts the air flow. Is this true? and if so what would be the best option then? Should i stick with the CAI + bypass or go a different route?

the previous owner didn't take much care of the car, or simply didnt do things right and im looking to change that little by little (however im a complete newbie when it comes to cars, as a fulltime student/work i lack the time and lack the tools to learn on my own).

I also figured if i'm going to do the tranny swap and i've been wanting headers and exhaust, i might as well do it at the same time. I've decided to go with megan racing 4-2-1 headers and greddy or skunk2 exhaust. Low and behold here lies another problem (::sigh::), my car has kind've been over heating and it only happens after i run the car for a while, and the only way the temp. goes down again is by turning on the ac lol. I've replaced the radiator already and after talking with someone i think that my catalytic converter is clogged and that might be causing the engine to overheat. So here's the newbie question, if i install headers and exhaust, does it come with a catalytic converter? or do i need to purchase one? also is completely removing the catalytic converter a viable option (i live in FL no emission laws) ? will that greatly increase the noise levels (hope not) and if i do remove the cat how will that affect my o2 sensors since they're on the cat?

im rlly srry for the stupid newbie questions, but i tried to search for answers but can't find the exact ones im looking for. Thank you guys in advance i reallllyy appreciate it!

Just get a short ram cai. It really doesnt get hot on the other side of the battery. The wheel well kind is senseless if it floods a lot.

Welcome to the site! And glad to have another FL Lude onboard. And let me start by saying I know how you feel with the auto tranny, I had mine rebuilt last year.

First off, as far as an intake goes, you might want to look into the Type-S Dynamic Chambered Intake. Not only can you forget worrying about water, but it also dynos more HP than any other intake. Plus they are usually about $179 shipped.

Also, our radiators have 2 fans on them, one that is supposed to be on just about all of the time, the other only comes on when the A/C is on. From what you've said, is it possible that your primary fan died? You might want to look into that.

With the header, you won't really gain any HP, the only plus is being able to restore lost HP due to rust/leaks etc. The Cat-back will grant some minor power gains, but don't expect it to be incredibly noticable.

Hope that helped!

Re: need some advice on mods for my car! :]

welcome!!and about the tranny swap the range should be somewhere between $2500-4000. from what I've been told up here in ny for the parts and labor, but if you choose to have enough time and do it your self from what i've herd it should be no more then 1500. And depending if you have connections for the parts you can find them cheaper or even get hooked up. im in that situation right now but im really not sure what imma do at this point

Re: need some advice on mods for my car! :]

thx guys for the replies so far.
So as i understand so far, theres no point to putting headers on except to free up some lost hp. hmm still sounds like it might be worth it.
also, could u guys provide me with a highflow cat that you recommend?

so does anyone know how much a tranny swap could run me?

Re: need some advice on mods for my car! :]

I live in florida as well and i have the ebay CAI with a K&N filter.. true other intake designs could make more power... but its not going to be a huge gain and I spent 20 bucks on the intake vs 100 plus.. also its a two piece design so during the rainy season i just stuck the filter on the piece that was still in the engine bay.. problem solved. A tranny swap is definitely going to be wayyyyyyy too pricey... get the honda manual and some friends and some beer and just do it yourself.. its really not that hard, just a lot of work.
