Problem with 5 speed? NEED HELP!!!!

Im new to this site so if im posting this in the wrong place im sorry. I really need help here. I have a 5th gen type sh and my trans. needs rebuilt I do already know this, but yesturday I was driving on the interstate in 5th gear and when I would mash on the gas the rps would go up and the motor would rev up but there was no change in speed, almost like it was slipping. Is this what it was doing? was the tranny slipping or the clutch? I am a mechanic myself but I have NO CLUE when it comes to transmissions. any help would be great thanks. also if anyone knows if honda makes a tranny rebuild kit let me know. THANX

Re: Problem with 5 speed? NEED HELP!!!!

Sounds like a failing clutch. I don't think its your tranny at all. Does it seem to be worse when on a incline?

if anything on a 5 sp grinding of gears would be more like tranny problems. unless its your fluid level thats low or the slave cylinder is crapping out.

But your slipping, I am all most sure its your clutch either the pressure plate or the bearing or both.

Just get a clutch kit, also while your in there re surface your flywheel, unless you are putting in a lightweight one.

Re: Problem with 5 speed? NEED HELP!!!!

Well I already have a 12 pound flywheel I put in about a year ago from Exedy and a stage 2 clutch from ACT. The reason I think my tranny needs rebuilding is because when im in 2nd gear and I let off the gas the trans will pop out of gear. also if in sitting in neutral and not on the clutch the trans is making all kinds of noise like metal on metal grinding noise, but as soon as i push in the clutch the noise stops. also the trans leaks fluid and I have to keep adding fluid about every 3 weeks. but now I dont want to drive it since its slipping like it is now.

Master cylinder? what? What about the noise? Ive heard it could be the throwout bearing or the pressure plate or all sorts of good stuff any clues?

Re: Problem with 5 speed? NEED HELP!!!!

BB6,

Used......Tranny :-) I'd just get a used one if money is tight. I mean, honda parts are typically reliable as long as you take care of them.

Re: Problem with 5 speed? NEED HELP!!!!

I personally have a fidanza set up sitting in the basement waiting on a place to put it in, don't have a garage, plus the timing belt needs to be changed so I guess I'll do it all at once.

Are you sure its grinding noise and not rattle? I ask because sometimes the throw out bearing or release bearing rattles at idle without clutch engauged then will stop when you press in the clutch. You are probably seeing a bad bearing hard to diagnose without being there and hearing it first hand.

Re: Problem with 5 speed? NEED HELP!!!!

Yes a rattle could also be what im hearing. I just know it sounds like HELL. but as you said as soon as you push in the clutch its gone. I plan to change the 12lb flywheel to a 10lb and the clutch im gonna go with a stage 3 from ACT. I have a EXEDY clutch now and have not been to impressed with it. I already have a ACT flywheel but its a 12lb and I kinda want a 10lb so im gonna change that while im in there. A buddy of mine said it might be a good idea to use a HONDA throw out bearing this time instead of the one that comes with the clutch and shizzz

You said you weren't nice to it while breaking it in so that could be part of the problem my friend. And why not just go down to an 8lb Flywheel?

well I have read on here and a few other sites that if you drop all the way down to an 8lb flywheel that if you also still have your power steering and AC that the car acts like it wants to stall out when its ideling. Do you know anything about this? what weight flywheel do you use?

Yeah dude, I've never heard of AC/PS problems with a lightweight flywheel, it's BS. If those problems happened with an 8lb they would probably happen with a 10lb too...

Re: Problem with 5 speed? NEED HELP!!!!

Changing to a lightweight flywheel won't affect idle. It will increase acceleration, wtq, and fuel mileage. It will be different to drive a little bit...you'll need to rev more to get going from a dead stop, but once you [re]learn to drive it, it'll be like second nature.
