lookin to get cams, opinions?

ok so i got some money that is burnin a hole in my JDM cupholder, and i wanna get some new cams. personally i think im gonna go with the brian crower stage 2 NA cams/springs/retainers. (wish it was enough for the stroker kit) while im at it im gonna throw on the AEM adj cam gears i got sittin at the house. so my question is, how hard is changin cams out, any advice for makin sure everything (belt, cam gear position) is correct, and most importantly is anyone runnin these cams, and anyone reccommend a particular set of cams?

Re: lookin to get cams, opinions?

Bigger isn't always better. I think you should get some head work done since you won't be driving it for a while. Get a 3-angle valve job, port and polish then get some Type S pistons while I'm at it. After than, get a tune. Then save for cams.

oh no the stroker kit is a far far off desire. but doin the headwork, cams, and gears, and possibly intake manifold at same time sounds like a good idea.

Re: lookin to get cams, opinions?

Ah again I am hearing about Type S pistions, doesn't this bump the compression up to 11.5:1 or something close to that? Plus can that go in a stock sleeved (FRM) H22A4?

Sorry for highjacking the thread, I've started some research on a NA build.

By the way I've heard good things about Skunk 2, plus pooponurhead might still be selling his? Or they might have already exchanged hands. Worth looking into. Think he had springs and retainers as well.

Re: lookin to get cams, opinions?

its right around 11:1 or so. and yes they can go in b.c they are the same bore its just the wrist pin location is slightly different. and types s motor still has FRM sleeves so it is fine

i would just get type S cams and a lil PnP and valve job and call it a day.IMO

Re: lookin to get cams, opinions?

So with the Type S pistons I am assuming you have to get the Type S rods as well?

no you dont just the piston is different. the difference between the two wrist pins is what changes the c/r not the rods

The simplest and most common answers aren't always right.

Of course, what's right and wrong depends on what you want out of the car. You can do a good bit with the stock manifold. They're actually really really good for stock.

Re: lookin to get cams, opinions?

install wise, if you dont know what you are doing and you dont have a manual then pay for someone to install them along with the valvetrain.

adjustable gears arent going to do anything for you since you can only adjust the intake cam for OBD2 configurations.

Re: lookin to get cams, opinions?

you can change the cam, you just cant move it via adjustable gear without throwing a check engine light. You have to convert to an OBD1 distributor.

if you are going to modify the inside of your engine, you need to be very "real" with yourself. If you dont have the supporting mods for cams, then you arent going to gain much.

what header and exhaust?

you are going to want something that can independently tune fuel and ignition.

megan header and test pipe with custom catback and some no name muffler. so you dont think the neo would be able to tune enough to support cams? i find that hard to believe.

so basically you have a bolt on setup that doesnt exactly match an engine that wants to see cams.

and i know it cant tune enough. I'm a tuner so i know it has its limits.

Re: lookin to get cams, opinions?

you can do whatever you want. I buy what functions as it is meant to function. That means that i am going to recommend something that might not fit your budget. I wouldnt go with Crower cams to begin with. They are cheap sure, but there are better cams out there and modifying your engine just because the parts are cheap is just asking for a world of hurting.

when you modify your engine, you need to be looking at the whole picture. Everything has to WORK TOGETHER in order to make buy these parts worth while. NA is not like boost. You cant just throw something together like you can a turbo kit and it still go fast. NA takes much more thought process in picking the parts that work well together in order to have a nice setup.

Re: lookin to get cams, opinions?

the budget is not really the issue. if i wanted to go boosted, i would buy a turbo kit right now. but i like NA. really my issue is im looking for more power and tought cams would be a decent next step. originally i was lookin for an intake manifold but through research didnt think that a IM like the skunk2 would be that much more beneficial than the stock. im pretty much open to suggestions. as far as bolt ons go, im about topped out. i was thinkin about getting a new head and having it PnP'ed then put the cams/springs/retainers/maybe valves on it then installing it as one. i really wanted to get a hondata but the s series wont work with my auto tranny :( i am really just kinda stuck on what to do next. $1000-$1200 is what im giving myself to spend.

if your lookin to spend a lil more than a grand then you should go with the auto to 5 speed swap. you will then be able to get so much more out of your car. and way more fun to drive

He's got an Auto??? If you do, the best thing you could do is a 5spd swap. I was in a 5spd Lude yesterday and holy sh!t. The difference is night and day. I thought there wouldnt be much of a difference. But there is a HUGE difference . I am not yet well informed on engine modifications. However, I can tell you that no matter what you do to your engine that Auto is going to hold all of it back. To really feel and get the most out of your work, you're going to need that 5spd. I regret buying that dam Auto. Time for a student loan for a 5spd swap!....If you do have a 5spd please disregard this and I will delete from the thread.
