Winter tires rubbing rear struts?

Hi, been browsing this forum since I got my lude, but never got around to registering. I just slapped on some Blizzaks I picked up on Craigslist. Now I just bought my BB6 about.. 1200 miles ago. The struts are factory stock w/ 91k miles, and I'm not lowered. The offset for the Tires I picked up was a little bigger than our standard tires, everything matches up fine other than the rubbing. It's extremely loud and happens when I go over bumps, or turn a little sharply.

The tires are originally for a mustang.. don't ask me what year, guy didn't say.

The question being, would replacing my struts fix it, since they probably need to be replaced @ 91k miles anyway? I'm not going to be driving on it until I can find out.

Re: Winter tires rubbing rear struts?

nope, new struts will fit exactly like the old ones so you'll still rub. the problem is the tire size, especially if they're off a rustang. they're prolly entirely too wide, like at least 235's which is unheard of on our cars. go see what the tire size is and get back to us.

Re: Winter tires rubbing rear struts?

I'll have to check tomorrow. It's like.. 8 out and windy. They're only like, a quarter inch wider to any side, it seems like they're hitting the top of the strut. I have no idea what it is on the back, but it's a little half U shaped thing that is attached to the strut.. I think, that it's rubbing up against.

Sorry for the lack of correct terms, I'm learning cars under my uncle and he calls things "That funky shaped thing there." Not very accurate but he gets the job done and well. I just haven't had the time to take the car to him. In either case, I got the tires for dirt cheap.. literally, I can turn around and make a nice profit off them if I have to change em.

On that note, I've searched the forums to no avail, for daily driving what Struts should I get? I was looking @ KYB AGX Adjustables, but not sure if it's worth getting when it's my daily driving / romp on occasionally car. I came from an RSX so I'm still getting used to the lude. I love the lude, I hated the RSX.. so I'm hoping to learn a lot about this car.

Sorry about the discombobulated post, I'm a little tipsy.

Re: Winter tires rubbing rear struts?

haha - don't be sorry - you should go read some of Yogi's posts sometime, cause compared to those you sound like Albert Einstein!

What kind of rims and what size rims do you have? what size tires? cause I have the S2000 16" rims and lowered about 2.5" and I don't rub on the strut at all, and my camber issues are MESSED up, lol. I rub on the inside of the fender wall up front tho....ick.....

I am in the same boat as you, my car is a daily and occasional "race" car and I roll with the Eibach Ground Control set up for my suspension and I love it - it's fully 4 way adjustable and it came with the car, i have no problems with it at all and it is a great set up - maybe you should check that out too, see what you can find

Re: Winter tires rubbing rear struts?

its not the struts is just that the tire is too big... now if you are looking to replace them anyways KYB AGX are the way to go... great ride quality.

oem~koas:: what side do you rub on in the front b.c i only rub on the right side if i am taking hard low speed left

I know lol, I was just asking on a side note what kind of struts I could get. Mine have 91k on em.. and Chicago tollways are really wavy so their kindof worn. I'll go outside now and grab some pics w/ the tires off since I have to swap my DD tires back on anywho.

Re: Winter tires rubbing rear struts?

Here's some pics, I found where it was rubbing, or where I believe it was rubbing.. I checked all inside the well and nothing else showed any signs of remotely rubbing, though I only drove like 10 miles with the tires on, they didn't show any signs either. I'm prepping them for storage / sale right now, they were filthy so I'll grab the size off em after they're washed.

http://img167.imageshack.us/my.php?i...any0018dg6.jpg Red circle is where I believe it was rubbing.

http://img145.imageshack.us/my.php?i...any0016su7.jpg Doesn't look like they would be rubbing up top, the jack isn't lifting it any, just sitting under it waiting for me to jack it up and change the tire.

http://img262.imageshack.us/my.php?i...any0017eq1.jpg And it does look like they stick out just barely too far.

http://img162.imageshack.us/my.php?i...any0015gp0.jpg not too bad looking with steelies, surprisingly.. I wouldn't sport them for looks, but yea.

I took my car to the touchless after I took the pics so don't feel as bad for her. Steamed under it and then sprayed under it, waxed then clearcoated.. can't hand wash her until spring rolls around :( Stupid Chicago weather.

Edit: Can't see the pics on the forums from my iphone so i just threw in the links.

Re: Winter tires rubbing rear struts?

I never saw what size wheels and tires your rolling on, but I do have to say woah, those are huge, that wheel and tire size is not designed for the Lude at all.

Re: Winter tires rubbing rear struts?

Hey dude, just installed new BF Goodrich Traction TA 225/60R16's on 45 offset rims. No way will these go anywhere without tearing my precious Prelude to pieces. I went back one size to TA's 215/55R16's and they work perfect. Only had to trim the rear bumper tab and I am good! Love the fit, I am not a low profile tire guy. So anyone want the biggest tire with out modifications, 215/55R16's with 45 offset will work.

Re: Winter tires rubbing rear struts?

Yea, I just bought em off craigslist because a few people on some forum said they would fit. Not really upset about it, I bought em for 150 w/ 90% tread left on em, can probably turn around and sell em for 300ish. It's unfortunate that they barelllly don't fit though. Anyone in chicago area need some blizzaks? :P

Re: Winter tires rubbing rear struts?

So as to not have to create another thread.. are there any good stash spots in the lude? My friends 4th gen you can pull the panel around the shiftboot up and stash it there. On my RSX you could do the same thing.. Only place I've found so far is in my trunk behind the plastic paneling where the taillights are housed, it just takes a while to get it in and out.

I rub whenever I turn the wheel..... - doesn't matter the speed - and it is a little worse on the driver's side when compared to the passenger side.

But there is a place up in the cities by me that you pay $80 a side and they completely fix your camber issues PERMANENTLY, not that adjustable ball joint stuff, this is drilling and custom fab sh*t, and it works amazing and they completely fixed my buddies Tc
