Should I?

Hey Guys

Long read ahead but I'd seriously appreciate you're opinions as I am somewhat confused.

Back in May, I bought my first car. It was a 1997 Nordic Silver Honda Prelude. I loved her but was kind of unlucky. I bought the car at a used car dealership and I think i got pretty scammed. It's been a little more than six months since the purchase and I've already needed to dish out 1,200 dollars on repairs. Now, the engine is knocking really bad. I'm told an engine rebuild is probably necessary but was only going to consider starting it after the winter. Now I'm thinking an engine rebuild is somewhere around 2 grand on top of the 3 grand I'd like to put into modifications. So instead of repairing her I'm thinking about switching it up.

While browsing my city's car site [montrealracing.com] I saw a pretty sweet lude going up for sale. I'm considering selling my car and buying this one instead. Here is the site with details and pics of the car for sale. http://forums.montrealracing.com/sho...d.php?t=607918

My Car:
1997 Honda Prelude
Nordic Mistic Silver
210 000 KM (Canada)
5 Speed Standard
Base Model

The Good:
DVD Kit W/ Bran New Infinity Speakers
New Enkei Rims W/ Falken tires
New Crankshaft
Timing Belt + Water Pump Done
Regular Oil Changes

The Bad:
Engine might need to be rebuilt
Some rust spots
Small fender bender created a dent above the left wheel but was repaired
The fact that I don't know any information about the car before I purchased it (Damn used car dealerships!)

So here are some pictures of it.

So basically, I'm thinking of buying the new one and need to know what you guys think? Is it worth it? I've never really been a fan of silver and a paint job alone is around 2 thousand. To add I'd still need to buy coils, skirts, etc... If I were to buy it, would 5 grand be too much to ask for selling mine(Keep in mind they cost around 8-12 on average here) and finally would you buy it if you were in my position?

As I said it's my first car, my parents aren't helping much with the decisions so I'd really appreciate any feedback what so ever. Thanks.

^pictures can look awesome but the engine is what counts

then again... 10k is alot of money.
How much did you pay for yours? +1.2 repairs +around 4.5k (if you rebuild the engine with performance parts) + time to do all these things *if you want performance car*
If your rebuild the engine (which i think is worth it) you'll come ahead of that white lude, and with the rest of the $ you could probably put in the same or better mods.

that lude ur looking at looks awesome, lots of cool mods. If there are no oil leaks, engine has no issue smooth trany Jjump on it *if you want a show off car*

Re: Should I?

Hmm...this is a tough one. Personally if I were you, I would get a JDM H22 and build that and swap it in with the money you have to spend.

Re: Should I?

Your not going to get no wear near what ya need to get the wight one with the engine knocking so that means your going to spend more of YOUR money. What are the 3k in mods ya want to do ? I would say rebuild the engine with a few of them. stage 1 clutch and light fly wheel would be the first i would throw in.

Re: Should I?

If you shop around in the right places you can easily get a decent H22 for ~$1500 and then $~1500 in the mods you want.

Re: Should I?

Ok - for one I'm skeptical on the fact he says "H23 blue top" when he has a 5th gen lude.... it would be an H22 and if he put an H23 in there I think he's an idiot....and how come there are no pictures of the engine on that site? Get pics of it - also, ask him if he has paperwork that shows reciepts of the engine swap to prove it was a swap from the H22 to the "JDM H23" he states he has...

It's a nice car, but something isn't right there.....I would be wary if I was you

couple other things i noticed:

He says "JDM CF Hood" -- pretty sure that JDM never came in Carbon Fiber....and that is NOT an OEM hood, it looks like the "invader" style I believe it's called....something aftermarket, idk...an OEM hood will be flat all the way across, not have that weird ridge thing in the middle

"OEM Seats" - OEM seats in a 98 base didn't come with that "H" thing that he has on the headrests and seats - he must have stitched or painted those on? idk, ask him about that too

What about the transmission?!?! He says he got a "new engine" but he says nothing about the transmission, and if you look he says that there is 197,330 km on the body - which would also mean that if he didn't get a new transmission when he "replaced" the engine then his transmission has 197,300km on it and that is quite alot for the original transmission

he also says he has the "OEM clutch" - wtf does that mean? did he replace the clutch with an OEM one, or is it the original clutch?

Re: Should I?

Good questions Rhys. To the OP, you should DEFINITELY find all these things out. Personally, I think it's retarded to put an H23 in a 5G, even if it IS a blue top. Is someone making fish sticks?

Re: Should I?

Thanks guys for the advice..I just sent him an email asking for more details so we will see how that goes. For the time being, I think last night was just a spur of the moment type thing where I was just getting really frustrated because the engine knocking was louder than usual. So I was just like F it ill buy another. I think I'm going to keep looking around but the ideas here are the best. I think i'll just rebuild it from scratch and know I have something reliable. Kaos pointed out a couple things I hadn't noticed so I appreciate that a lot gave me a new outlook on this deal.

Re: Should I?

Your welcome man - there are ALWAYS basic questions that need to be answered when buying a car, especially one that has been "modded" like he said - this is where paperwork and receipts become your best friend as the buyer AND even the seller.

The car looks amazing, I love the look of that car, it's already got the Panda theme going too, but there are just some things that are too shady about it...

Good luck man - keep us updated!

but a little extra power compared to an H22 Type-S or compared to another basic H23?

Cause Type-S > H23 Blue Top any day of the week for me
