Radiator - Factory or Aftermarket???

So my fiance and I are packed up for an overnight stay at my parents about 180 miles away a day before she leaves for Hawaii for a week for her borthers wedding, been a REALLLLY stressful week. Aaaanyway.... get to gas station to get gas, notice steam from hood, small amount of coolant on top of radiator! Just had my oil changed day before though maybe it was a sloppy fill job. I figured I would check it a few miles down the road, pop the hood and my radiator is peeing from a crack in the top plastic part. SHYT!

So do I replace it with a standard replacement from a parts store or buy aftermarket aluminum radiator? Pros and cons either way? What to look for in aluminum radiator? Welded vs. brazed? Brand to buy or stay away from? Thanks!

Re: Radiator - Factory or Aftermarket???

aluminum ones dissipate heat better, and are more "reliable" than the factory ones, seeing as they don't crack like plastic.
dual cores also cool better than single cores from the additional surface area.

personally i'm running a $120 no-name aluminum civic 1/2 rad and only have overheating issues when its 100+ degrees outside.

if money isn't really an issue, a koyo or fluidyne full rad will be plenty sufficient, and look baller as hell too

Re: Radiator - Factory or Aftermarket???

Thanks for the quick reply, Ive seen them varying from 150-800 ish for the big names. Any problems with running too cool. I live in northern Montana and it gets coooold sometimes. Will it take a excessively long amount of time to heat up?

If money is a bit tight you can also opt to just have the end tank replaced. They're a replacement part, 5 bolts from memory.

Re: Radiator - Factory or Aftermarket???

Oh didn't know it was a replacable piece. Moneys not too tight right now I think I'm gonna pony up and get a koyo. I see people that buy 4 year old super duties that need $X,000 replacement turbos.I can drop 400 bones on a nice new rad and hoses. This will be the first non maintence part I have needed to repair. If some one know of a good place to get a koyo that's cheaper than about 350 let me know!

Re: Radiator - Factory or Aftermarket???

You can also go with Fluidyne, both great companies. Personally, I would go with aftermarket. Generally when something breaks, I like to not just replace it, but upgrade it. I think I saw Koyo radiators on racinglab.com for like $356. Not sure though.

Re: Radiator - Factory or Aftermarket???

Fluidyne was actually the first to pop into my head but they seem to be a consistant 200 bucks more than a koyo, granted it does come with a new fan but I'm thinking a koyo will be just fine. And after seein one installed definately looks ballin!! I guess it will give me an excuse to clean under hood better. I'm pretty bad at that.

It appears they are the same with the MT rad being shy a trans cooler (?) can this simply be plugged off? Gonna order tonight need to know ASAP! Thanks in advance

Scratch that! Deal WAS too good to be true. Ill let you guys know what I get!

Re: Radiator - Factory or Aftermarket???

Picked up a Griffin, heard good things about them and it looks like a solid product. Good happy medium between super cheapo and the upper echelon. $250 to my door. Through a parts distributor I deal with it was $460 my price so I cant compete with that! eBay gets my business. Store seems legit. It oughta be here in time for my fiance to get home from Hawaii. How depressing of a week is that, missed moms home cooked turkey dinner, blew up my baby and lost the little lady to a tropical climate.... :( im gonna go turn a bottle of capt morgan upside down in my mouth! LOL! I'll put up some pics when I get it!!

im 99% sure u can use the auto rad with a manual...you just leave the cooler hook up alone since you dont have one... if wont affect cooling abilities

Cap the cooler hook ups off and you can use one from an auto. I had one in my 4th gen, no problems.

Yeah you won't have any problems man, and that is a steal at that price. Never heard of Griffin, so good luck and let us know (or better yet, show us pics) how it looks/fits/performs when you get it!

So today at lunch. Knock on the door and TADA!!!

So of course I gotta tear it open like a 3 year old on xmas!!

Rodney was pretty interested!

Quality looks really good. I understand that they are handnmade in the states. Welds all look nice, good penetration but not too hot. Thin aluminum is tough to weld! All the threaded inserts look right and the filler neck is machined nicely. Should be a good piece. Sorry if the pics don't work. Doin this from my blackberry. Ill fix em later. I'm stoked. Can't wait to get put it in this weekend. Let you guys know how it goes. I'm more than happy so far.

Re: Radiator - Factory or Aftermarket???

Ok ok!! I got it fixed! Ill use the lil lady's camera when I put it in. Ill have top redo my big 3 positive cable. Can't have a merely zip tied power wire with a shiny new aluminum radiator. Here's a good question I never see covered... Is there better or worse antifreeze or is it pretty much antifreeze? I don't know how good mine is so I may as well replace it.

Re: Radiator - Factory or Aftermarket???

That looks pretty good. As far as I know, Prestone is pretty good (that's what I use). I use a 60/40 Antifreeze/Water mix year round. There's also this stuff called "Water Wetter" that you just mix with water and use it as coolant. Apparently it works pretty damn good.

Re: Radiator - Factory or Aftermarket???

Alright guys! Have you ever had one of those installs that went so well that...well I can't think up an analogy but this WASN'T one of those installs!!!! So got old rad out, no problems. Pull the fans off, hold up the drivers side fan and it fit but bottom bolt was 2" off. Sheet! Oh well. Hold up pass side. SHEEEET!!! Neither bolt on bottom line up and the shroud held the fan up about 1/2" from the radiator. Sooo, little shroud trimming, it fits the contours like a glove! Still have to worry about the bottom bolts though.I was at my buddy's house instead of the shop so I didn't have too much fabrication abilities. I drew out what I need to make for brackets so ill cut'em out and bolt them in through the splash guard. Now neither of the mounting studs on the bottom line up. The bottom tank sits nicely on the bumper and once bolted from the top that baby's not goin anywhere! So to the top mounts! They were close but no cigar. It was slightly too tall, by slightly, like 1/2"!!! Aaanndd they were in board about 1/4". So I'm gonna dig up thick sheet metal and build new top brackets. Now that 1/2" gain in height is just enough to touch the hood when closed. Seriously, if it was ANY taller the hood wouldn't close. But good news is its up and running with no leaks. Now in the radiators defense it is supposed to fit a 94-97 Accord and according to +ther manufacturers they should be interchangable. With this one not so much. To make it worse I get the douschebag of the year award...no pics! Sorry for the let down guys! Ill atleast throw up a couple pics the new one installed but I highly doubt anyone else is goin this route so a detailed description probably isn't necessary. But anyway, she's alive and running.
