SS Trans

I'm sure there are one million articles on this, but I have a recently bought 97 lude and it has the SS Auto. Famous for failing apparently. I would like opinions on how bad mine is...

It never slips out of gear. It always goes into gear. It always parks. It always shifts to the right gear. The RPM's never jump up or down.

However, it shifts pretty rough, like abrupt, from 1 to 2 when I first start it up. Smooths out after a few minutes of driving in the city.

Also, in normal driving and acceleration, it seems to hold the gear for just a second when it shifts. It shifts smoothly, and never takes longer than 3 seconds (which I read in an SS FAQ was the limit for normal trans operation) but always seems to hesitate a second. I wondered if it was slipping to neutral between shifts, but Ill be pushing the gas and the rpms never dip or jump up, so I ruled that out. Hopefully anyways, I'm no trans expert.

I can't afford to pay a million dollars just to have it checked out. Ild like an opinion on what state its in, and if it will survive a while. After Christmas I can afford to replace it if I really have to, but could think of much better things to spend 2000 dollars on. Im a fairly DIY guy, but have no knowledge of things that complex.

any help is greatly appreciated. And yes, Im a newbie. First prelude, and this is my second post.

Re: SS Trans

Hows the fluid look?

May just want to do a drain and fill if it is a little dark.

Re: SS Trans

Had drain and fill done when I got the car. Fluid looked really old but not burned. Helped some but symptoms still there. Put some trans helper stuff a mech reccomended in too.

Re: SS Trans

Well okay then...
The TC shudder got horribly worse, to the point I was looking into a TC replacement, then just the whole M6H1, since its so damn expensive.

Well would you believe I put a $7 bottle of Dr. Tranny ("INSTANT SHUDDER FIX") and old Dr. Tranny is a straight up guy, cuz that stuff worked instantly. I mean one minute I'm limping down the highway, decide to randomly stop at OReillys, put the stuff in, next minute I went 30 miles and all my shifts are perfect now and NO shudder. It was like early Christmas.

For the record, it was probly the crappy fluid Midas put in there, so I wouldn't expect miracles if your trans is shot. Hope this helps someone though.

Re: SS Trans

Yeah. For the record, a little jerk from 1st to 2nd isn't uncommon just after start up.
