Trunk Torsion bar setup

Hey guys im in need of a little help. When i bought this 99 prelude there were no trunk torsion bars to lift up the trunk or pop it open. My old prelude a 98 had the bars in there and the trunk used to pop open and stay open on its own. So i miss that feature and im sure the guy before me took out the bars so he could put in a sub or bigger speakers which are not there any more.

Now i bought brand new bars from a honda dealer ( 10 bucks each) and a the clip they go into (3 dollers) but when i tried to put them in it just does not work out right. When the trunk closes down the bars hit the stock speakers i put back into the car???? Can any one take pictures of there trunk torsion bars and possible take theres out and write up a little list of things to do to put them back in cause man i have no clue how they go in correctly.

Thanks for any help guys cause im not putting in any new speakers or sub boxes i just want my dam trunk to pop open again when i pull the lever inside the car.

P.S. I tried searching but came up with nothing on the subject. Maybe i missed something if i did sorry for the extra post and please just post a link to what im looking for. Thanks

I feel your pain. I felt it so much that I wrote this.

Those torsion bars suck. My clip thing broke off, and without the "proper tool" from Honda they're damn near impossible to re-fit. The issue is you need to get 180 degrees of twist into both bars, and you just can't do it with a pair of vice grips.

Now that i think of it when i pulled the old ones off of my old 5gen it did spin so much that i got scared and closed my eyes and backed off fast. That would explain all the noise that the dam things made when they went off. lol. Yes this is my second prelude just for those wondering. I had a guy clip my back end causing me to slide off the road and flip on a county road to were the back end was unrepairable and now i got a new one cause i love the car and am trying to sell the engine since the front is still good and the engine still runs. lol but i cant post it here cause i dont have 50 posts just 14

But thanks for the help man . If any one has pictures of the bars still original let me see them please. That would help a lot.

Re: Trunk Torsion bar setup

When I put new ones in I had to use a flat pry bar. They are a pain in the ass to do and can be very dangerious. Be careful.

I will have to look if I have any pics but I don't think I do. The car is away in storage for the winter so I can't get pick on how they look now.

I can say you have to twist them about 180 degrees to get them in though.

Be careful. I can't stress that enough.
