Icon5 New transmission or 5 spd swap???

My tranny gave out on my 98 prelude last night. It goes into neutral before brutally shifting into the right gear. I know there's extra cost for the knob, pedals, clutch and anything else required for a manual transmission. Can anyone tell me the average cost of swapping to a 5 spd manual transmission instead of purchasing another used auto transmission?

Re: New transmission or 5 spd swap???

^^^ I dunno about that,

But the average price for a SOLID rebuild is about two and a half G's. A swap runs about three and a half. The swap is the better option IMO.

As far as buying a used auto tranny, whats to say it won't go out in a week? Then you wasted $700.

Re: New transmission or 5 spd swap???

Swap is the better idea to be honest. If you can do most of it yourself you can get out of it relatively cheaply, if you can't then it will cost about the same as rebuilding the auto.

No, an Integra transmission won't fit. It won't. The H2B isn't made for Preludes, only civics and integras. No, it won't fit.

(sorry, I'm just pre-answering the questions that usually follow my initial answer)

Re: New transmission or 5 spd swap???

just do five speed swap. i did mine w/ me doing the labor for around 800- using junkyard parts an f22 tranny etc. if you went new w/ alot of parts for ex: clutch /flywhee/press plate then yea your gonna be looking at more money... but if you do it yourself which it is pretty straightforward... then your gonna save yourself at least 1000- alone... if you shop around for parts now and getting everything organized for later to do the swap your gonna save more in the long run... lemme know if you go through w/ it i can guide you through.

Re: New transmission or 5 spd swap???

Buying the tranny cost me only around 100 and then extra parts about another 300 but it's funny because one of the most expensive things I bought for the swap aside from the tranny was the Honda tranny fluid...it's pretty easy to do in my opinion, especially in 4th gens, but I would think it's definitely worth a couple hundred bucks for a lifetime mod.

Re: New transmission or 5 spd swap???

Hey y'all, not trying to hijack but I have a question too. My 98 auto trans is shot as well, can't do the 5 speed swap at this time so I'm needing to put another auto trans in. I've been told that only 98/99 auto trans will fit my 98. Is this accurate or will any Prelude auto transmissions fit my 98, USDM or JDM? I have a line on a 97 JDM auto trans for a good price but I can't get any confirmation that it will fit.
Thanks a ton, I need to move on this ASAFP.
