Emergency Brake Light Stays On

I searched for a post like this...did not see one. When it gets somewhat cold outside my emergency brake light stays on even though its not engaged. After a while of driving between 6-18 minutes it will shut off. Any ideas?

Re: Emergency Brake Light Stays On

like E said, it the brake fluid. the sensor is very touchy. the fluid could be inbetween the lines on the reservoir and still say its low. just add some fluid till it goes off.

Another distant shot is moisture in the tail light, but it will usually stay on if that's the case.

Re: Emergency Brake Light Stays On

the same thing happens to me

*edit* well i just checked my fluid and it seemed fine. it was between the max and min. i disconected one of the plugs cleaned it and put it back in. after i moved my car to another spot and driving it felt weird. so i popped the hood and my intake wasnt connected to the tb.

Re: Emergency Brake Light Stays On

Mine does that as well, I checked the brake fluid level, but it's normal. I think that I'll try to replace the floater next time, its really annoying when it's dark and you just see a bright red light, lol

what is happeneing is as you use the brakes they wear. that causes the pistons to get pushed out farther and farther, leaving more room for the brake fluid to go. ALSO, the cold temps is compressing the fluid and it takes up less space. causing the float to drop. as engine temps warm up, so does the fluid, expanding and taking up more space. which causes the float to rise. hense, why the light goes off. JUST ADD MORE FLUID. if you max that bitch out and it still doesn't go off, then yes you probably need a new float.... or your e-brake position sensor is stuck. (but thats only if it NEVER goes off)

Most of the time the float will stick in cold weather. Just take the cap off, jiggle the float and then replace the cap.

Re: Emergency Brake Light Stays On

ok I had this problem But now it's gotten worse. Now the rear pads are constantly rubbing against the discs. mainly on the right one but still on both. Tonight it got se bad that it felt like i was actually driving with the ebrake on. Anyone know what this could be?

Thanks

Re: Emergency Brake Light Stays On

Typically when your BRAKE light is on, it has to do with the e-brake only, not the ABS. There is a seperate light for that. Mine does the same thing when I start it up, I just had a stage 1 clutch and 8 lb flywheel installed, so my car sat for awhile. But, I could be wrong. It is just the cold.

This was happening to my Mom's 97 Avalon. I changed the brakes and the light stopped staying on...Dunno if that has anything to do with anything :P
