Nitrogen's (aka Ijin's) BB6 Spoon Sports Brake Pad Retro-fit find =)

Hi All,

I am proud to announce a great find! 8) As you all know, Spoon Sports do not make parts for BB6 Preludes (or any other Prelude for that matter).

The brand is one which I look up to and until today thought that perhaps it was out of reach for my car. That was until I had a look at retro-fitting a set of EK9 front brake pads.

The results are simply amazing and the pedal feel awesome. These babies are not cheap but if it's the best you want you're best going with a compound like this.

Manufacturer information on these pads, with my comments:

1) High fade resistance - True to their word, although I am bedding them in (I don't care what anyone says, this is how I prefer to christen a new set of pads or rotors), these brake pads do not fade under braking pressure.

2) Excellent operation at low temperatures - From cold to optimal operating temperature, these break pads had a great feel to them. I've tried EBC, Bendix and Hawk before, Spoon Sports have a great compound here!

3) Equivalent long lasting to normal configuration - Bad Jap English but basically they will last as long or longer than OEM pads. I am yet to find out ;)

4) Low level of impact to the rotor - This is good news, less wear on the rotor sees less stress on my wallet, I've also noticed that brake dust is near non existent. This may be because they are still new, my EBC Greenstuff was like that new, lets hope brake dust doesn't become an issue.

More blurb:

These characteristics have been achieved not only through the type of pad materials, but rather a number of different factors such as the back metal have been combined for ultimate response fast braking.

Furthermore, in addition to generating excellent stopping power, the characteristics of Spoon brakes apply the negative-inertial acceleration generated during braking to achieve a superior level of control with respect to cornering power.

With a rotor temperature of between 200 and 300C, the optimum degree of negative acceleration can be achieved, thus allowing any driver to handle the vehicle with confidence in road-driving situations as well as developing a sense of directness in brake application.

Sounds good to me =) here are some photo's:

So you talk about a retro fit, so you have to go with a EK9 caliper?

For dust if these are ceramic they will have alot of brake dust.

Hi Rob,

No not retro-fit as entire assembly, just brake pads. It is interesting that the EK9 and BB6 are the same. It would have been to the benefit of Spoon Sports to market the pads for Honda Prelude's too. I am glad I had the chance to trial fit a set on the front.

than this is not a retro fit at all. this is a coincidence!

retro is making something fit where it wouldn't normally. e.g. TSX Projectors in a 5th gen Headlight = RETROFIT

Thanks 2.2Lude, unlike others I don't come here to ask questions alone. I am trying to put back some knowledge.

Cheers

Re: Nitrogen's (aka Ijin's) BB6 Spoon Sports Brake Pad Retro-fit find =)

this is interesting....ek9's have a wider applications list for brake pads..i.e pagid state they dont do a pad for preludes but do for the ek9...and pagid brake pads are sick!!

Front for now only, when I have money to spend I'll test fit some rear pads from Spoon Sports until I find a match. If anyone wants to do this so long, be my guest ;)

I've used Hawk and Bendix Ultimates, both get noisy and have a lot of dust given off. So far the Spoon Sports pads are great.

As you pointed out correctly - They are sh!t expensive. I was fortunate, I am doing a bit of R&D for the official supplier in South Africa - so got mine at cost.

Ciao.

I don't agree with the noise comment, but my hawk pads are hella dusty.

Yes, they are very dusty. I am running PowerBrake die hard series rotors on one of my other cars with Hawks and this is the one that is noisy, it may well be rotor pattern more so than the pads.

No one can compare to my duralast pads....i think on the box it says ultradust. Like i think its an alternate method instead of painting ur rims black. Its called drive-n'-paint. The more u drive the quicker they get painted. Props to the guy who designed them

You must have fun cleaning rims :P thanks for advising though, next pad I'd like to try is Carbonetic Carbon pads, they sell at 3200ZAR here, if you convert it its more expensive than the Spoon Sports, not sure what makes them better (yet).
