Engine is shot replace or rebuild?

so i have a 2001 type SH. i love the car im not getting rid of it. its belching smoke out the tailpipe and im figguring that that means the engine is shot yes?

so the question is do I
a. get the engine rebuilt
b. swap the engine for another one
c. some other option i don't know about?

also if i do the swap i hear there is a better version of the H22 then the one that came in my car originaly from japan would a japaneese engine drop into mine fine and pass inspection?

and finally if i decide to do the rebuild i would like to rebuild it better than stock so what parts should i swap out and what should i replace them with, my goal is to eventually throw a jackson racing supercharger on it with upgraded pulleys, im told it will be like 9psi??? or something like that.

any help/comments/thoughts are appreciated

Re: Engine is shot replace or rebuild?

That doesnt mean the engine is shot. from what I hear (because I dont infact own one) that the h22 loves to burn oil. Especially for those who are "vtec happy"

How much oil are you putting in a week/month?

Yes there is the JDM H22A with a higher output, but its hard to pass emissions in a lot of states. I know here in jersey, and especially in cali they are cracking down bad.

If you were to rebuild, and you were building for boost, I would recommend taking a look around at other member pages on the site. The basics are pistons, rods, pins, sleeves, injectors, etc etc. there is a lot of knowledge to go around here on PZ, take advantage of it.

And when you supercharge (or turbo) any car, there isnt a set psi of what you boost. You and your tuner decide what your car can handle, what is needed, and what you want for your specific application. My advice would be to take a look around here, and just read. Read day after day after day after day. Start learning about your car, the ins and outs, and what you can do for performance. And dont jump on the first idea b/c it sounds great, take the time to look into it.

The internet is full of information. Use it to your advantage.

JRSC FTW

I would first see what is wrong could be nothing never know then go from there. If you do one day want to get that JRSC then not much point in meting the JDM engine the lil bit of output ya get vs the cost it's more of a i got to have it kinda thing.

Re: Engine is shot replace or rebuild?

I would rebuild the one you have that way you know what you got. Now you said you want to put in the Jackson Racing Supercharger. I agree with what was said in the other posts, read up on goinf FI. Our H22's are a bit high on the compression guess thats why we need to run 92 octane or higher. Anyhow high compression doesn't go hand in hand with boost. 9 psi might be a little high for a stock compression of what is it I looked it up on the internet but unsure of what the USDM H22A4 has I believe its either 10.5:1 or 11:1 not too clear on it. But this is what I have come to understand in going FI by reading these posts on this site and many others.

Going FI, many do it on stock motors and run low boost 6 to 8 psi. I here they do well with a good tune you can't go wrong its just when you get pwned somewhere and you get happy on the boost controller and you blow the motor. So ask yourself will you want more by that meaning you want to be able to turn up the boost when you need it. If so then a motor build is in order. Again in an earlier post you will have to resleeve the motor they have a coating called FRM this will cause aftermarket rings to not seat properly plus you can't run forged pistons in them, so that is why you need to resleeve. I myself was about to start a build and I started to budget and got up to $8000 just building the motor alone, so I decided against it. Now I myself would be happy with just a gain of 100HP so I think I can achieve this with just a turbonetics kit at 8 psi, and get it tuned. I'll be happy with that I have heard Jackson Racing Superchargers run on stock motors at around the same boost 6 to 8 psi getting gains just a bit less than going turbo.

Now if you just want to rebuild your engine. You talked about your car smoking now what color is the smoke I am going to assume its black (oil smoke). Is it smoking at idle or just when it hits Vtec cause mine smokes too in vtec. I would do a compression test on it I just did mine and I got (do a wet and dry check)

http://preludezone.com/showthread.php?t=12546

check that thread out for doing your compression testing

187, 188, 189, 179 all within 10. Thats not bad. Plus it will differ in elevation and I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains here in VA. Try running Engine restore for 4 cylinders little silver can at Auto Parts stores. Use this is the next couple oil changes you do may help the smoking a little bit. Just wondering had the car you bought sat for any length of time? If it did you should have tried to pull the sparks plugs and drip some oil down into those holes just enough to wets the rings as this will help recondition the rings a bit. Plus as you read about the compression tests you will see that is the way you do it wet. I still have yet to do a wet test on mine. Do the compression test before you decide to rebuild.

Now if you have the open ended income go for max boost and huge engine build, but I would say to have it done right will cost you more than $15,000 before its all said and done. Good luck

Re: Engine is shot replace or rebuild?

well i have put over 6 quarts of oil in since my last oil change about 2000 miles ago... that seems like a lot of burning to me. i do get a little v-tech happy sometimes but since i noticed the smoking at the pipe i calmed down on the v-tech but im still burning alot of oil. i dunno the compression test that the mechanic did was like 150psi... he didn't give me the actual readouts for all 4 cylinders. can i buy a kit to do it myself for relativly cheap?

anyway my eventual goal is to be running the JRSC, i just want a supercharged lude since there is already a turbo charged one in this town and everybody turbos their hondas anyway. so assuming then that i don't get crazy with new parts for the engine and i just get the rings done is 5000 an appropriate budget range? i've been looking around the site but unless i know exactly what im looking for its hard to find stuff.... but im a newb at this forum stuff anyway haha
