Oil Problem/ VTEC Question

Hey guys, I've got a small question maybe you guys are familiar with. The problem is, I'm doing oil change every 2000 kms when it's supposed to be around 5000 I believe. I use VTEC rarely but when I do, I notice ALOT of fumes coming from the exhaust...I'm guessing the oil burning. Could it burn that much that I'm filling up on oil twice as fast? I've brought it in to a garage and theirs leak...it just burns it much faster than normal. What could it be?

welcome to the wonderful world of the H22. Not all of them go through quite that much, but some of them do. I know mine did.

Re: Oil Problem/ VTEC Question

Alright but i'm not talking about miles I'm talking kilometers i mean there must be a significant difference if you use ALOT of VTEC and I use some and need to re fill at 2000 kms.

Re: Oil Problem/ VTEC Question

I was losing 3 quarts every 1000mi. I had the cam seals, valve seals, and pistion rings done. it went to 3 quarts every 2000 mi.

Re: Oil Problem/ VTEC Question

Ok, so every 2000kms(1243miles)....And, A LOT of VTEC depends on the drivers opinion, so what may be little to you, acutally may be what i consider a lot....Anyway....First, what type of oil, and what weight of oil are you using??? How many Qts. do you put in??? And when you day change the oil every 2000kms(1243miles), do you actually draing the oil, or do you just add more in??? If so, how much oil do you add in??? and after you add the oil in do you check to make sure its at the proper level, and not over filled???

Re: Oil Problem/ VTEC Question

Makes sense about the perspective and opinion thing. I use 5W 30..I don't really know how many Qts and I don't drain the oil neither. I add enough so its filled up but not too much that it over fills its at the proper level.

Re: Oil Problem/ VTEC Question

Ok...i used 5w-30 before too...try to switch to 10w-30 or 10w-40....I use 10w-40 myself now, and thats why im getting the oil changes at a higher mileage than I use to...Also, the amount of oil our cars take is 5.1 Qts....And, the reason your car seems to be buring a lot of oil is that your just mixing it with the old stuff...I dont know...But, I would change to 10w-40 at your next oil change(which includes draining the old stuff out) And make sure your put in 5.1 Qts...And as normal, check your oil level about every two weeks or so...

Re: Oil Problem/ VTEC Question

For me personally...Im not sure how much i was burning when i was using the regular
5w-30...But it was enough to make me wonder the samething you are now..."Why the hell am I Burning so much oil"....So, I decided to upgrade to the 10w-40, and it worked for me...And, also make sure your not leaking from the oil pan, or the oil filter too...Some people double gasket their filter, and oil will slowly leak if its tight enough, if not you will notice once you start the car because oil will be splurging everywhere....

Re: Oil Problem/ VTEC Question

^vtec seal and cam seal are potential culprits too... and the nature of the h22a... I think I am using less than .5 quarts in 3000 miles though... which I am happy about... had the h23a1 swapped partly because it was drinking 3 quarts in 3000 miles, haha.

Re: Oil Problem/ VTEC Question

I'm having the same issue here, made a post a while ago..., anyways I got my car serviced few days ago and they found a leak from oil filter o/ring and the oil pressure switch, had those replaced and the oil level has been maintaining ok. They also said that these cars are know to burn oil when they have some years on them and to fix the problem you need to do a piston ring job done as mentioned by ogsmakdade.

Check form major leaks, get them fixed and keep an eye on it!
